CC2640R2F: sharing crystal oscillator between two modules

Part Number: CC2640R2F
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2640

I have two modules requires 32.728kHz clock. those are CC2640R2F and GPS module. TI reference design uses SC-16S 7pF crystal and im thinking to share this clock between GPS and CC2640R2F.

Is it possible? what are other consideration needs to be taken into account other than output power when sharing crystal oscillator (RTC)?

  • Hello,

It depends on the required accuracy (duty cycle ). The CC2640R2F can output its 32-kHz System Clock to a pin which is described in the TRM section 11.3.4 Map 32-kHz System Clock (LF Clock) to DIO/PIN. The CC2640R2F also support External LF clock on a DIO input pin. THen you must use a DIO for input instead of the XTAL pins. Please refer to this thread for more info:

It is also possible to run the CC2640R2F with internal RC oscillator only in peripheral/slave mode only at the expense of higher current consumption. Please refer to the app note "Running Bluetooth® Low Energy on CC2640 Without 32 kHz Crystal" found in TI Resource Explorer:
