CC2640: Inverted F antenna orientation

Part Number: CC2640
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2541, CC-ANTENNA-DK2

Developing a BLE  beacon receiving device.  Will use CC2541 and an Inverted F antenna.  The device will be wall mounted with the PCB in the same plane as the wall.

Looking for longest range and best sensitivity. If we assume that the BLE beacon advertising device  is mounted on the same floor but could be anywhere in 360 degrees around our device,   should we place the inverted F antenna with the long leg perpendicular or parallel to the floor.  (or won't it matter?)

Thanks

Dan

  • Hello Daniel,
We notified an antenna expert to chime in as well.

The antenna radiation pattern is relatively omnidirectional, so you should have relatively good coverage in most configurations. There is small dip in gain along the axis of the long leg so in theory it might be better to place it perpendicular to the floor. If this is an indoor environment I don't think you will observe much difference in practice.

  • Hi Dan,

If this is a PCB antenna, then the largest factor to the radiation lobe will be the direction of the PCB board itself. The directivity of the lobe will be in relation to the PCB effective area size seen in a particular direction.

Recommend to use antenna CC-Antenna-DK2 #11
