Hello All,

I wanted to update my firmware after receiving the new firmware over SPI. In my application, I receive the data from SPI and store it into a queue. I wanted to know what would be the size of the queue ? Could I write the entire firmware onto this queue before I process the data and do the firmware update to FLASH?

Hi Shyam,

Could you elaborate on what you are doing here, are you using the external flash to load an image? How much data do you expect to be storing in the queue?

As the queue would be in RAM, you would not be able to fit a full image as the flash size is larger then the amount of available RAM.

Hi M-W,
I am trying to load the updated firmware .bin file to the flash and then boot from there. The update firmware would be coming in through the SPI. So, I was wondering if I should put in into a queue and then write it onto the external flash or directly read the data from the SPI Rx Buffer and store it into the SPI flash. Or is there any other method?

Hi Shyam,

I would go towards a implementation where you try to store the image away right away to the external flash. You could possibly use some kind of queue to temporary store the data until you write it to the external flash, but this queue would never be able to contain a full device image.

An example would be to use the queue as a FIFO between the two SPI interfaces where the "SPI to flash" will start to empty the queue as soon as there is data to be written the external flash:

SPI IN -> | Queue | -> SPI to flash
