CC2640R2F: Flash freed up in R2F?

Part Number: CC2640R2F
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2642R, , CC2640

Hi guys,

My customer is looking for a BT module with more flash. We know we are on the cusp of CC2642R, but it's still in development so no module vendors have a module for it yet.

I know the CC2640R2F had some of the stack pushed to ROM, how much storage did that free up exactly? And, if they use BT4.2 vs BT5, what is the difference there? How large is the 4.2 Stack?

Thanks,

Brian

  • Hi Brian,

The CC2640R2F device is the second ROM revision of the CC2640 device. If they use BT4.2 this will make a big difference. (Also we are currently not releaseing regular software updates for CC2640 so there is no reason to start development with this device).

If your customer is planning to use BT5 I would target CC2642R1 because of exactly this. The BT5 stack (TI BLE5-Stack) is not contained in ROM so this requires more flash for the stack.

If you need exact number you will have to build the project yourself with the configurations and IDE you intend to use.
  • They are using CC2640 now. They are trying to just upgrade chip without changing much about their product, but if they can upgrade to the R2F version to free up a little flash, they might do this. We are just not sure how much of the stack got pushed to ROM, so how much more flash they would have to work with if they did this.

Once they decide to go to BT5, they will definitely go CC2642R.
  • Hi Brian,

If you need exact number for flash usage you will have to build the project yourself with the configurations and IDE you intend to use.
  • Marie,

Sorry, I must be doing a bad job of explaining what I am looking for. I was just looking for what the difference was between available flash (for application code), when using 4.2 stack, between CC2640 and CC2640R2F.

I went back and found an old presentation from 2016 and looks like you guys pinned a number on it, there is 80kB of flash free for application code, apparently comparable to our competition's 256kB devices. Still not sure how much the difference is in available flash between the two devices, but this is probably enough for my customer to figure it out.

    Thanks,

    Brian

  • Hi Brian,

Refer to table 3-2 in the CC2640R2F datasheet.
