CC2640: Using bluetooth chips without microcontrollers - custom firmware

Part Number: CC2640

Hi!

I would like to use CC2640 (or R2) or something similar in my project.

However, since it is a simple, low cost project and considering that I just need a couple of GPIOs, I wish I could use the Bluetooth chip itself to trigger some outputs high/low without having to use an external microcontroller.

Having said that, is it possible to make my own custom firmware (using the original firmware - BLE stack - as a starting point) ? Programming it in an IDE (preferably a free one) in c/c++ or something?

Or anything I can do to just insert a function that will be executed when an AT X command is received on the chip.

I am an a novice electronics engineer but BLE isn't much my area, that's why my questions may seem a little confusing.

Can anyone please enlight me regarding this matter?

Thanks a lot :)
