CC2564: Dual mode connection and pairing

Part Number: CC2564

Hi,

I am using CC2564B in dual mode, Classic and LE simultaneously. But the instances seen in phone are different, LE can be connected with pairing of its own and classic with pairing of its own. Is there any way to connect them simultaneously as a single instance and pairing just once? Can I use HFP and HOGP profiles in that same connection with pairing?

Regards,

Chetana Patil

  • Chetana,

In a dual-mode Bluetooth device like CC2564B, the classic BT and BLE are treated as separate connections (even though connected to the same phone on the other end). The classic BT and BLE protocols use different pairing methods. Thus, there will always be separate pairing for both connections.

Could you please clarify your requirements about pairing? Is the goal here to reduce user input?

    Best regards,

    Vihang

  • Hi Vihang,

We want to use HFP and HID in single connection with phone. Yes, we want to reduce user input. Currently I have to manually connect and pair to classic instance and le instance. Is there any way to connect it through Application like NRF connect? Is there any Application provided by TI to connect dual mode cc256x? Does HID need passkey pairing or justworks pairing will do for keyboard to work?

I assume, by HID, you are referring to the BLE HOGP service.

The BLE connection can use the just works legacy pairing when the io capabilities are set to NoInputNoOutput.

The LE pairing is a pretty standard procedure. You may use some of the 3rd party apps like LightBlue or BLEscanner for it.

Like I mentioned earlier, the classic BT and BLE require separate pairing since these are treated as two different connections. One way to reduce the user input is by leveraging the OOB (out of band) pairing for classic BT. The implementation requires performing LE pairing like you are performing right now. Once the LE connection is encrypted, your application transfer the OOB data between the two devices over the encrypted LE link to complete pairing for the classic BT. The OOB pairing does not require any additional user input.

You can refer to the Out of Band (OOB) section in the Generic Access Profile specification.
