CC2564MODN: Current high in sleep and active modes

Part Number: CC2564MODN
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2564,

CC2564 team,

One of our customers is experiencing power consumption problems with at least 5 boards in a recent batch of 100 boards built with the CC2564MODN. They’ve built other small quantity runs of the past 3 years without this problem.

On the failing boards, the sleep current is approximately 6 to 16mA instead of 0.12mA. The active mode current is 32 to 39 mA instead of 24 mA. They see this regardless of the different versions of firmware they load on the boards. The removed the CC2564MODN from one of the boards and replaced it with a new part, and found the current dropped to the normal expected range of 0.12mA and 24mA.  They were able to isolate the CC2564MODN for these current measurements.

The devices drawing high current are working fine otherwise. They can connect to a phone and transmit/receive.

Do you have any ideas about what might cause this?

Thanks,

Darren

  • Darren,

I'll add HW folks to the thread here.  According to our offline email earlier, the bad devices were not always bad, or seemed to be getting worse over time, "~2mA when put to sleep; when tested yesterday, it was pulling around 16mA."

Did they move a failing device to the old board for a full A-B-A swap analysis?  If so, did the current remain high?  If it did, that points to the silicon being damaged somehow.

The first thing I would check is the power up sequencing and if it change somehow on the new boards, to make sure that the power supplies are stable before applying nSHUTD.

    Regards,

    Travis

  • Hi Travis,

Thanks for the suggestion.  I'll ask them about power sequencing and nSHUTD.

They couldn't do the A-B-A swap analysis since the device was damaged during the removal.

    Thanks,

    Darren

  • Hi Darren,

Any  update on the power sequencing?

    Thanks,

    Riz

  • Hi Riz,

The power rails rise at about the same time, and are stable before nSHUTD goes low.

I don't have confirmation on the 32.768 kHz clock yet.

There is one unusual thing on one of the boards with high current consumption.  The RTS signal is being held low before nSHUTD goes high.  (It should be pulled high while in Shutdown.)  Then 500 ms after nSHUTD goes high, RTS goes high and never goes low again.

The Bluetooth is still working though, so I guess the UART is working.

The other high current board does not have this strange RTS behaviour.

    Thanks,

    Darren

  • Hi Riz,

The customer has confirmed that the clock is active within 2ms as required for power sequencing.

    Thanks,

    Darren

  • Hi Darren,

Thanks for the info. I will go ahead and close this out here as we are now taking this over e-mail.

    Thanks,

    Riz
