CC2640R2F: Conformal coating will affects the Bluetooth communication?

Hi,

The boards getting failure due to flow of Coolant Liquid/oil. Conformal Coating will protects as complete water Proof?

We are using CC2640R2FRGZR bluetooth device and TPS63031DSKR Regulator in the below board, Application CNC Machine.

This board is assembled in the Metal Box as shown in the image, but it's not a waterproof. So that the Coolant/Oil/~water will flowing into the box and PCB through holes/un-joints, which causes PCB Board failure.

We can't make the water Proof Box for that, because of our customers restriction. So some assembly manufacturer suggesting to use DCA / Silicon Conformal coating Which will protects the board from Coolant/Water like waterproof.

we know, TI will not recommend to use  any conformal coating, but we don't have any solution's, so we have to take risk due to lack of facility in the customer site.

Kindly advise, Our Question Is?

1. DCA / Silicon Conformal coating will safe the boards from Coolant/Oil/water? Its give complete water proof protection?

2. If we use Conformal coating, the Blutooth communication will happens normally or it will de-grade the communication?

3. If we use conformal coating, is there any issues for the CC2640R2FRGZR bluetooth device and TPS63031DSKR?

4. If any other Disadvantage to the Board by using conformal coating kindly advise.

Kindly help us to solve this.

    Hi,

    I suggest you test the board before and after the Conformal coating. If the board performance is acceptable with the Conformal coating then you can use it.

    Kindly advise,

    1. Why TI not recommending conformal coating? What are all the disadvantages using conformal Coating?Kindly advise.

    2. For my understanding, If we not use conformal coating and we use only IP66/IP68 waterproof enclosure. Is there any effects to the wireless communication for Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Performance will be same or it will get affected. Kindly Advise.

    Hi,

    For Q1: Conformal coating may affect the RF performance because of the Resistivity of the material. That means it is not a perfect insulator.

    For Q2: Enclosure should not affect the performance of the system. But it may affect the performance (Antenna matching ) of the Antenna. You may need verify the Antenna matching . If it requires, you may need to retune the Antenna matching.
