CC2640R2F: Is external antenna necessary for custom application?

Part Number: CC2640R2F

Some colleagues of mine are working on a custom PCB that uses the CC2640R2F microchip and the can't seem to agree if an external antenna is needed for Bluetooth communication up to 1.5 feet. I couldn't find the answer in the microcontroller's datasheet, but is there an inherent antenna in the uC that can be used? Or is there no antenna at all and therefore some form of external antenna has to be used no matter what? Please help!

  • There is no inherent antenna in CC2649R2F. You should use an external antenna.

  • It's no antenna in the device itself meaning that you need an external antenna of sorts. That said, 1.5 feet is not a long distance meaning that using a single ended match () and a very simple PCB antenna would get the range you need. But I would advice to use the inverted F PCB antenna   we use on the launchpad in case you decide to reuse the design at a later stage and you then need better range.
