This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BLE-STACK, CC2540

Hi, I downloaded the drivers that come with the BLE-Stack from TI but Windows XP is unable to start the device. "Add new hardware wizard" displays the following:

Cannot Start this Hardware

There was a problem installing this hardware:

TI CC2540 Low-Power RF to USB CDC Serial Port

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

I first tried using Windows XP in Parallels in OSX, I thought maybe the device didn't show because of Parallels Desktop... so I installed Bootcamp. Is there a reason why it wouldn't work on a Mac in Bootcamp? Bootcamp means I'm running Windows native, so I don't see why it wouldn't be able to detect the device.

Maybe the USB dongle is damaged? Customs agents opened my package as it entered New Zealand, maybe they damaged the device? LED2 is glowing green.

I'm really at a loss here, help.

Thanks.

  • update:

I tried the dongle on an HP laptop, same problem. Only difference is on the PC it chose COM15, on my Mac it chose COM3, both cases theres a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in Device Manager.

Now there's a new problem, I installed Packet Sniffer and SmartRF Tools, after which I found: cc2540dongleps.inf driver in C:\Program Files\Texas Instruments\Extras\Drivers\

I installed that driver and now the dongle doesn't have any LEDs lit.

  • Are you trying to use the dongle as a sniffer, or are you trying to use BTool with the dongle running the HostTestRelease network processor application? If you are using HostTestRelease, you do not want to use the cc2540dongleps.inf INF file for the driver, but rather use this INF file:

    C:\Texas Instruments\BLE-CC2540\Accessories\Drivers\usb_cdc_driver_cc2540.inf

  • Hi Willis, thanks for your reply, I was trying to use HostTestRelease with BTool, when I select the usb_cdc_driver_cc2540.inf driver, I get the (Code 10) error on both machines. If Windows cannot start the device, could the device be faulty?

  • I've never seen that message, so it's possible that the device is faulty (especially if you see this on multiple machines). If you contact the TI distributor or rep through whom you acquired the kit they may be able to exchange it for you.

  • Thank you Willis for your answer, I called our local TI support number, and realized there's a national holiday in China, so have emailed tiasia@ti.com instead, hope to hear back soon. :)

    Best regards,
