CC2652RB: not able boot CC2652RB board with battery or equivalent supply

Part Number: CC2652RB
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CSD25202W15
Hello,
In one of our design we are using CC2652RB WMCU. MCU  powered using external  5V  or coin cell battery (3V, 1000mAh). detail power architecture is shown in below diagram.
Concern is here.
1. When MCU powered with external 5V/3V/2V DC, On board Buck-boost will generate 3V same supplied to MCU and MCU will generate required supplies like VDDR (1.6V) and MCU boots. BT able to pair with external BT devices.
2. when MCU powered with coin cell battery ( or equ. powered supplied by power supply) On board Buck-boost will generate 3V same supplied to MCU and MCU will not generate required supplies like VDDR (some time 0.8V/09V/1.1V and MCU is not booting.
Suspecting battery path not able to provide required current and tried load regulation on bat path. looks ok.
For bat reverse polarity TI PFET CSD25202W15 used.
Please provide your suggestion or Comment on this.
Thanks in advance.

Raghu
  • Hi,

Did you check 3V supply (Output of Buck/Boost) , when it is powered from Battery? Does it drop when CC2652RB connected to 3V line?

    Thanks,

    PM

  • Hello PM,

Buck boost output is as expected 3V no drop when powered on battery.

  • Hi,

What is the Maximum current Capacity on Buck/Boost Converter? Did you check with an External Load, whether it is working or not?

Did you check the Current drawn by CC2652RB board by using an External Power Supply?

    Thanks,

    PM

  • Hello PM,

Buck/Boost max current capacity is 300mA. checked with external load 50mA (our requirement is less than 30mA). its working fine. but Ripple generated around 100mV which is quite high.

with external supply CC2652RB draws 3-4mA in TX mode nearly 15mA.

    One observation in Power architecture

we are using Load switch for power mux between Bat and 5V DC in below config.

When Power mux path bypassed (shown in red line) and unmount  100k res battery path works perfect. this Mux is culprit please suggest any correction required in this.

  • Hi,

Good you found the issue with Mux.

It seems this Mux Device is not from TI. So, we can't help with your Mux circuit. Please contact Mux Manufacturer for further support.

    Thanks,
