CC2640R2F: Debug interface is locked.

I am trying to program a custom board and I am getting this error 

>Initiate access to target: XDS-L50000DQ using 4-pin cJTAG.

>Create XBAL object failed: Debug interface is locked.

>XBAL EB pointer is null.

>Failed to create device object.

Before this, I tried to program the board using UART serial bootloader and the I was able to flash program using SmartRF Flash Programmer V2 but the firmware isn't running. And after that I couldn't flash also, the backdoor enable button I set was also not working.

I tried to mass erase the board using XDS110, but I am getting the above-mentioned error.

  • I suspect that you manage to overwrite the CCFG section of the flash with the image you managed to flash and threby bricked the chip.

    Please check the content of the last flash page in the hex file you used.

  • this is the last flash page which contains the ccfg section

    Assuming the chip is bricked, how I can un-brick the chip and reflash the image file?

  • Please use the "Insert/ Edit media" to include a picture in a post.

    If a mass erase does not work, you have bricked the device which means that you are unable to access the chip and you have to replace it.

    Please note that in the CCFG you can set to which degree you can access the chip after you have flashed it. If you disable the ability to mass erase you would not be able to do so.

    This is the ccfg file I have used to flash the chip

  • Can you point out my mistakes and possible solutions?

    1. I want to use serial bootloader for flashing and backdoor enable button is connected to pin 20.
    2. I would like to be able to mass erase the flash memory.
    3. Using a balun+chip antenna setup for RF
    4. using both 24Mhz and 32.768KHz oscillators
    5. Debug access should be enabled

    I guess this became more of a ccfg question, can you please clear my doubts

  • Try to do mass erase from Flash Programmer 2 to see if it can unbrick your chip.

  • I tried that too, and the flash programmer wasn't able to detect the chip in the first place.

  • From the CCFG it looks like you should in theory be able to do mass erase since you haven't disabled this option. But it looks like you have locked the JTAG interface etc in the CCFG_TAP_DAP_0/ CCFG_TAP_DAP_1 fields and hence the tools are not able to access the chip. I would advice that you are not changing this part of the CCFG early in the development.

    Did you change something else than the bootloader fields in CCFG.c?  

  • Apart from this, I have changed the "SET_CCFG_MODE_CONF_SCLK_LF_OPTION"  to "0x1" since I am using an external LF 32.768KHz clock

    previously it was set to "0x2"

    And also to add up few things about my debug environment, I am using XDS110 from CC2640R2F launchpad to debug my custom board.

    you have set a few entries to "access disable". For debugging keep this section at "access enabled" and change this as the last step of the code development.

  • I changed the chip and now the smartRF flash programmer was able to detect the chip.
