CCS/CC2640R2F: Need to understand how the sniffer "CC2540 USB evaluation kit" works

Hi,

I have a CC2540 USB Evaluation Kit ----> with which I want to capture the packets when my mobile application and the BLE(CC2640R2F Development Kit) device are communicating.

Issues:

1. I am able to see the data coming from the mobile application sometimes on the sniffer display window and sometimes not(even if the data is sent always from the app side).

2. When I am able to see the data from the app to BLE side --> in that case data from BLE to the app is not shown(even if the data is sent always from the BLE side to app).

This is the visibility issue I am facing while testing my code.

Please help in rectifying this problem.

Hi Saurav,

I wonder if you could use some BLE features non-supported by CC2540.

Which stack (BLE or BLE5) are you using on the CC2640R2F? Are you using DLE or the 2M PHY? Are you using extended advertisements?

Hi Clément,

Stack used: BLE

SDK --> simplelink_cc2640r2_sdk_4_10_00_10

I am working on "Simple peripheral" project.

Regarding other things I am using the default settings regarding the advertisement.

Hi Saurav,

Thank you for the details provided.

I think you are hitting one limitation of the CC2540. In short, the CC2540 can only sniff on one of the three advertisement channels. If the connection is not created on the channel listened by the CC2540, the connection won't be seen by the CC2540. This has been discussed in other threads (here for example).

You have two options. The first one is to accept this limitation and only hope the connection will be formed on the right channel. The second option is to modify the code run on the CC2640R2F in order to advertise on only one channel (click here to see how to select the channel the CC2540 scan on and how to modify the advertising channels used by the CC2640R2F).
