CC2564C: HCI inquiry doesn't show all active BT devices

Hi,

developing and debugging our own CC2564C based hw. Device shows only some active devices, not all of them even if half meter next to each other. To exclude sw related issue we have reworked our hw and use HCI tester tool for verification. Getting exactly same results using TIInit_6.12.26.xml library, attached configuration script and HCI_inquiry command. Only two/three devices listed, with the android phone I can see another 15 devices. RF front end and BT antenna doesn't seem to be a problem, once paired and connected in BT sink mode, operating range is about 10meters.

    Inquiry TX power is set to 12 and cannot be changed. Whatever value enter, always read back 12 using HCI_Read_Inquiry_Response_Transmit_Power_Level command.

    Comparison with TI-eval board doesn't show any difference in terms of device discovery. But I realized that most of surrounding active BT devices are BLE thus not discovered with HCI_inquiry command. 

    Only BDR and EDR devices are listed what is to be expected. Use of Periodic Inquiry mode makes a real improvement.  It's more efficient then standard HCI_inquiry which doesn't show all available devices anytime and discovers between 3-5 out of 5 available devices. 

    We have a clear evidence (TI-eval board log file) that 50:1E:2D:3D:26:B0 (StreamKit1832) was discovered after 22 seconds of the periodic inquiry. That's the case, device wouldn't be discovered with HCI_inquiry at that moment.

  • Ok.. What is the Inquiry length being used in 'HCI_Inquiry'? With periodic inquiry, obviously the chances are better as it tries periodically. Do, you have any other BT connections or BT/BLE activities at the same time?

    there were no other connections or activities active, Ladislav was just using the HCITester and only tested inquiry. He will resume testing on Monday. What Inquiry length do you suggest to use (I don´t know what he used unfortunately and he left the office already)

  • Changing these parameters didn't yield any improvement. I'm wondering, could the Inquiry Mode influence the result? We're using Extended mode at the moment.

  • Changing the inquiry mode to standard didn't change the result either, so we're still looking for a solution here.

  • we have moved bit further and found different CC2564C behaviour when used with HCITool or with own hw and application software. 

    1st case: CC2564C is connected via UART to a PC running HCITool

    - HCI tool captured data from CC2564C on HCI_Inquiry command are in standard format containing BD address, decvice class, clock offset ...

    - All active BT devices including (headset class Panasonic SC-MC07) are discovered and listed.

    2nd case: CC2564C loaded with TI CC256XSTBTBLESW 4.2.1.0 firmware, connected to the MCU running app sw

    - data captured with UART/USB converter attached in parallel to HCI_UART confirmed that CC2564C responds in extended inquiry format, means BT firmware must be configured for that since we can see additional info e.g. device friendly name and so. The problem is that one active BT device (headset class BT speaker Panasonic SC-MC07) isn't listed at all, neither BD address nor friendly name. For some reason filtered out by BT firmware.

  • Your device is acting like master, issuing the 'Inquiry' right? As such, extended Inquiry response is from the slave.. Did, you capture the HCI messages between the MCU and CC2564C to compare with the HCI tool script, that is detecting the Panasonic device.

  • So, basically with HCI tester, the panasonic device is discovered. Where as with your MCU host stack, you do not see the device getting discovered. Is this understanding correct?

    If so, check the HCI commands sent from HCI tester vs MCU stack. I wonder, if the MCU stack is sending, 'HCI_Inquiry_Mode' with a value 2 or so.. i.e inquiry results with RSSI or EIR format..

  • Hi, your understanding is correct. Device is discovered only with HCI tool. Basically HCITool and MCU stack uses identical Inquiry command 01 01 04. The only difference are additional commands sent by MCU stack in advance.

  • I suggest to take BT FW logs to compare the HCI commands between HCI tester and the MCU to review the differences.

    I provided decoded logs for comparison already. Those are captured using extra UART interface listening to HCI_UART communication.

    As you can see above HCI Inquiry command is identical in both cases but response is different.

    We are few weeks before start of production and device isn't capable discover all BT speakers, could you please prioritize this topic within your team.

  • It would be easy to compare the FW logs, as they are the ones seen and acted by the controller. 

    Anyways, From your above HCI command list, it seems the MCU is also sending page and Inquiry scan. Did, you try disabling it?

  • Whatever we do in order to change parameter or disable Write_Scan_Enable command at all, BT stack always executes Write_Scan_Enable with parameter 03. 

    Any other ideas?

  • Which host BT stack are you using? 

  • You can try with the API 'HCI_Write_Scan_Enable()'. Please check the 'BluetopiaCoreAPI.pdf' in the 'API Documentation' folder. You can also use the GAP API, 'GAP_Set_Discoverability_Mode(); and 'GAP_Set_Connectability_Mode()', in the same document.

  • Our current implementation sets GAP_Set_Connectability_Mode() to true whenever there's no active A2DP connection, otherwise to false. GAP_Set_Pairability_Mode() is set to pmPairableMode_EnableSecureSimplePairing and GAP_Set_Discoverability_Mode() is set to dmGeneralDiscoverableMode when we're trying to pair to other devices (also during inquiry), and get set to pmNonPairableMode and dmNonDiscoverableMode respectively, when an A2DP connection is established.

    Is this the recommended operation of the stack?

    What's the relationship between these APIs and HCI_Write_Scan_Enable()?

    I've now tried the inquiry also with all these calls disabled, and it still didn't make the affected BT device visible on the inquiry list. Any other suggestions?

  • Can, you try with periodic inquiry mode, i.e 'HCI_Periodic_Inquiry_Mode()'. Unfortunately, we do not have a sample demo. But, the API usage is described in the document: BluetopiaCoreApi.pdf

    we have tested HCI_Periodic_Inquiry_mode which increases a chance the device to be discovered but it didn't fix our issue. Any suspicious messages in the log which I provided you?

    Since it's becoming serious problem please let us know, we'll send you Panasonic SC-MC07 device for further debugging.

  • In the provided logs, i do not see 'Periodic Inquiry scan' issued to the controller. From the logs, i see that you have enabled 'Inquiry and Page' scans as well before 'Inquiry'. Did, you try disabling 'Page and Inquiry scan' (HCI_Write_Scan_Enable(xx,HCI_SCAN_ENABLE_NO_SCANS_ENABLED,xx)), before issuing 'Inquiry'? Also, did you try increasing Inquiry length from 8 to 12 or 15.

    We, will run the tests on our setup with Panasonic SC-MC07, once we get it..

  • Hi Hari, in the meantime we fixed the issue of Panasonic SC-MC07 device discovery by applying service pack v1.4.1. Now other BT connection failure issue popped up. CC2564C is acting as BT sink and attempting to pair and connect with JBL FLIP4 BT speaker. Connection fail is reported by BT stack. Could you please check the attached log what is causing the connection to fail?0728.btlog.zip

  • The logs show connection getting established. But, later it was getting disconnected either from local or remote with 'Disconnect' reason "Remote User Terminated Connection". It appears, this is likely coming from higher Host stack profile level negotiation or user termination. Which Host device are you using? Is it possible to take HCI logs?

  • Well, there are tools like Frontline HCI sniffer etc.. When you say, you can capture in HEX format, does it mean you capture at the UART serial port with a UART sniffer?

    If, you can take air sniffer logs with either Ellysis or Frontline sniffers, that would be fine too.

  • I captured UART HCI communication in hexadecimal format listening to HCI interface between MCU and CC2564C, hoping that can be decoded by tools used by TI for BT development and debugging.

    In the meantime, we've changed BT connection mode to auto-accept but It didn't help, JBL FLIP4 BT speaker pairing fails.

    By the way, have you succeeded to decode raw data? Is there anything that we can help with?

  • I think, it is best if you can send one of these failing JBL FLIP4 BT speakers to us. We can try with our EVMs and take air sniffer logs to analyze the issues.. I could n't find a tool to parse the HEX dump you provided.
