LAUNCHXL-CC2640R2: BT and MCU selection

Part Number: LAUNCHXL-CC2640R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2640R2F, CC2652RSIP, CC2652R, LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1

Hi Sir,

I would like help in choosing a bluetooth module and microprocessor for device i'm creating
Essentially,
we wanted to create a pair of devices that read values from an IMU motion sensor using SPI,
apply machine learning algorithms to process the data and send to a smartphone using bluetooth.

I found CC2640R2  is a good product, but I do not know if it's suitable for me.

LAUNCHXL-CC2640R2 BT wireless MCU ,
The end application would be an IMU, heart rate, blood oxygen sensors connected via I2C and SPI to MCU on one wrist and,
IMU connected to MCU on the other wrist.

is it a suitable one?

If not, can you suggest me a TI product?

Thanks.

  • Hi,

First of all, CC2640R2F is definitely capable of Bluetooth LE communication - so it is not a bad choice. That being said we do not offer a module for CC2640R2F (some third parties do offer some).

Let me suggest you two other solutions:

    • if you need a module only responsible for BLE communication, I case https://www.ti.com/product/CC2650MODA will be a good fit.
    • if you need the BLE device to also handle the computation, I would recommend a CC26x2 device. With its Cortex M4F, this device would really be a good fit. On the top of that, we now have the CC2652RSIP ( "SIP" means system-in-package i.e. a module with integrated crystals, antennas etc. in a single package). This would provide an extremely compact solution.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

    Best regards,

  • It's much better to start developing with the Launchpad, that way you have room to do testing such as measuring power consumption. Also you can easily wire up sensor boards.

  • Hi sir,

I sent in an order for the LAUNCHXL-CC2640R2 BT wireless MCU.
Could you clarify about the module not being offered,
does this mean I can't program and use the extra MCU's for use in multiple devices?
I'm planning to have the device run some light computation but didn't look into the CC2652RSIP with crystal integrated.
Would the CC2640R2 BT work similarly with an external crystal.
Also wondering whether I would need an external antenna and which antenna modules are compatible.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Frank,

Let me clarify a bit my first answer. When I said we do not offer a module based on CC2640R2F it means we do sell CC2640R2F devices. But we do not sell fully qualified modules with integrated  crystals. That being said you will find modules vendors selling this kind of product. As mentioned if you wish to go for such a module, we recommend to do the development using a LAUNCHXL-CC2640R2F.

The CC2652RSIP  mentioned earlier is based on the CC2652R device, not on the CC2640R2F. The characteristics of these devices are different (please refer to the datasheet of the parts).
To develop with the CC2652RSIP I recommend this development kit. If it is not available I recommend to use the LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1.

When it comes to the antenna, the CC2652RSIP does NOT have one integrated. TI has announced a similar module (called CC2652PSIPA) which does have an antenna but it is not yet available.
If needed, we have two antenna selection guides the Antenna Selection Quick Guide and a comprehensive Antenna Selection Guide.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Clement,

    Thank you.

Just wanted to clarify the last point,
I have 4 MCU's on a cut tape and would like to design a PCB to solder the custom programmed MCU along with antenna, crystal, sensor and battery.

The IC comes pre-soldered to the development board so i'd like to know what the standard procedure is to program all the IC's to use them independently on other circuit boards?

  • Hi Frank,

Could you open a new thread to discuss this last question? That way the proper experts will answer.

In the meantime, I would appreciate if you could mark the thread as resolved.

    Thanks and regards,

  • Hi Clement,

Thank you. I will close this ticket.

    Thanks for your help.
