LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1: SmartRF Packet Sniffer 2 and received signal strength

Part Number: LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1

Hello,

I am attempting to use the LAUNCH-CC2652R1 evaluation board to detect the presence of Bluetooth, but I'd also like to know how strong of a signal was received.  Using the instructions found at the following site, I get the packets in Wireshark, but there is no RSSI information shown for the Bluetooth packets.

https://software-dl.ti.com/lprf/packet_sniffer_2/docs/user_guide/html/users_guide.html

The above guide explicitly states how to look at the received signal strength of a Zigbee packet, but not of a Bluetooth packet.  Is there some way to get the RSSI from sniffed Bluetooth packets through the SmartRF Packet Sniffer 2.0/Wireshark solution?

Thanks,

Stephen

  • Hello Stephen,

What is contained inside the "TI Radio Packet Info" of your sniffed BLE packets?  Can you share a Wireshark file to review?

    Regards,
    Ryan

  • Hello Ryan,

I have provided you the Wireshark capture.  It had to be zipped to allow this platform to upload it.  Wireshark capture of Bluetooth sniffer.zip

    Thanks,

    Stephen

  • Please help me understand what you are looking for if it is not the information highlighted by this image.

    Regards,
    Ryan

  • Hello Ryan,

That is exactly the information I want.  But when I open that .pcap file in Wireshark, I don't hav ethe TI Radio Packet Info menu.  All I have are Frame 1, IPV4 src, User Datagram Protocol, and Data.  Is there some special add on or configuration in Wireshark necessary to see the TI Radio Packet Info?

    Thanks,

    Stephen

  • What's your Wireshark version?  The results shown are from opening your capture inside v3.0.14, do you have the BT LE LL protocol enabled?  Perhaps Wireshark support could help with this request as well.

    Regards,
    Ryan

  • Hello Ryan,

My Wireshark version is Version 3.4.4 (v3.4.4-0-gc33f6306cbb2), and yes I verified that the BT LE LL protocol is enabled.  I will see if Wireshark has any thought on the issue.

    Thanks,

    Stephen

  • Hello Ryan,

I reached out to Wireshark support and they asked whether the TI Radio Packet Info plugin was actually installed.  I checked and it appears that the plugin is not installed.  I attempted once again to install PACKET SNIFFER 2.  However, with either the current Wireshark 64-bit or Wireshark 32-bit installed, I get to a point in the installation process where it looks to install the plugins, but cannot find Wireshark (see attached screenshot).  Note that I did not change the installation location from default as directed in the installation instruction.  What is the location that the Packet Sniffer 2 installation is looking for Wireshark?  Or is there a process to install the plugins outside of the standard Packet Sniffer 2 installation?

    Thanks,

    Stephen

  • Hello Ryan,

I found the instructions for manually installing the plugins to wireshark on the Getting Started Guide for the Packet Sniffer 2 program.

Copy the plugin files manually from SmartRF Packet Sniffer 2 install location (<install_dir>\wireshark\plugins\3.0.x) to Wireshark plugins folder (<wireshark_install_dir>\plugins\3.0\epan). Use the x86 version of plugins if you have a 32 bits installation of Wireshark or the x64 if you have a 64 bits version of Wireshark installed.

Unfortunately when I follow this procedure, I get an error when opening Wireshark that the plugin was compiled for version 3.0 and cannot be opened:

The plugin 'ti-ble-packet-info-x64-2x.dll' was compiled for Wireshark version 3.0

Couldn't load plugin 'ti802154ge-x64-2x.dll': 'C:\Program Files\Wireshark\plugins\3.4\epan\ti802154ge-x64-2x.dll': The specified module could not be found.

The plugin 'tirpi-x64-2x.dll' was compiled for Wireshark version 3.0

And when I attempted to download Wireshark 3.0 in the Wireshark.org archive, I couldn't find a Wireshark 3.0 version to download.  I could only find 3.2 or 3.4.  Is there a current link to download Wireshark 3.0?  Or are there updated plugins for Wireshark version 3.2 or 3.4?

    Thanks,

    Stephen

  • Hey Stephen,

Thanks for the update, currently you will need to find and download an archived version of Wireshark 3.0.x to support the latest PACKET-SNIFFER-2 solution.  Perhaps Wireshark support can further assist this request.  I will inquire about updating Wireshark plugins internally and let you know if any changes can be expected in the future.

    Regards,
    Ryan

  • Wireshark Version 3.0.14 (v3.0.14-0-gf6557718c0ef) works with sniffer 2 and download link:www.wireshark.org/.../
