CC8530: [CC8530] Inquiry about noise generation problem according to the streaming format

Part Number: CC8530

Hi, TI Support Team

Inquiries regarding the following problems have been received from customers.

The customer company is using the CC8530RHAR product, and we will share the analysis of the customer company related to the problem.

Problem: In case of 8khz Sine Wave Tone play, severe noise is confirmed in bands other than 8k as shown below.

[SLAC waveform & configure tool test result]

[PCM16 waveform & configure tool test result]

As shown in the above information, open the Config tool of the TX Device and change the streaming format from SLAC to PCM16.

[inquiry]

1) According to the streaming format (SLAC, PCM16) as described in the issue, can noise occur when playing a sound source with a specific frequency such as 8khz Sine Wave Tone?

2) After changing the format from SLAC to PCM16, the RF range dropped by half. (10m->5m)

Can the streaming format affect the RF range?

(Additionally, if you look at the Config rool, you can see that the latency of PCM16 compared to SLAC at 48khz is less. Is it true that the latency of PCM16 is lower than that of SLAC if it is actually measured?)

3) When changing the streaming format (SLAC -> PCM16), is there any possibility of side effects other than the RF range problem?

Thnaks.

Regards,

MJ

  • 1) According to the streaming format (SLAC, PCM16) as described in the issue, can noise occur when playing a sound source with a specific frequency such as 8khz Sine Wave Tone?

Yes. From the CC85xx Family User Guide: (Chapter 2.3.3.3 SLAC)

    2) After changing the format from SLAC to PCM16, the RF range dropped by half. (10m->5m)

This is to be expected. PCM16 with use a 5Mbps PHY (for 2 channels) and SLAC will use a 2Mbps PHY (for 2 channels.) We would expect to see about twice the range on the 2 Mbps PHY. Is it true that the latency of PCM16 is lower than that of SLAC if it is actually measured?)

See the table below for minimum latency of PCM and non-PCM formats:

    3) When changing the streaming format (SLAC -> PCM16), is there any possibility of side effects other than the RF range problem?

Please refer to chapter 2.3.3 Streaming Formats from the CC85XX Family User's guide for more information and comparisons between available streaming formats.
