CC2530 Ref Design Board Thickness Change Antenna AN043

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2511, CC2530

Hello

I intend to design a RF board using the CC2530 with the inverted F antenna AN043. The thickness between Layer 1 and Layer 2 is 0.25mm in the Ref Design CC2511 USB Dongle, but my PCB manufacturer provides only a thickness of 0.38mm between layer 1&2.

What do i have to respect in my design in reference to the beoad thickness?

Thanks!

  • Hi Jeremias,

PCB traces at radio frequencies have to be designed carefully to account for their distributed character due to their small size as compared to the wavelength.

Impedance of a single micro-strip trace over a ground plane depends primarily upon:
    • Width of the trace
    • Height above the ground plane
    • Dielectric constant of the PCB’s dielectric
    • Loss Tangent of the PCB’s Dielectric

There are various impedance calculators available such as TXLine from AWR (http://web.awrcorp.com/Usa/Products/Optional-Products/TX-Line/)

The change in thickness of the (height above ground plane) will cause a slight mismatch. This change should be compensated for by changing the balun and filter network from the RF output port to the antenna.
  • thank you, it was very helpful!
