Effect of ground plane on PCB inverted F antenna

Does the size and shape of the ground plane at 2.4 GHz have a significant effect on a PCB inverted F antenna (IFA)? Do I need to make sure that a ground plane is a particular size and shape, or can I pretty much just fill out the board with a ground plane and get good results?

  • The GND size will effect your matching network and also your radiation pattern. The 2.4 GHz antenna ref design available are quite robust and the GND size does not have to be a particular size. The antennas ref designs are monopole so the GND plane should be atleast the same size as the antenna if we are just stating a rule of thumb rule.
