Output power with SmartRF Studio

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2530EM

1. Among the three transmitting modes (CW, CW with modulation, and packet mode) when using SmartRF Studio with cc2530EM on cc2530EB, when the same output power level is selected, which one consumes least power? And by how much it saves the power compared with others?

2. When using SmartRF StudioIs, is the selected power level for packet transmitting mode the peak power or the average power? When the same power level is selected for all the three transmitting modes, does this mean the output power for the three modes is same?

  • The output power is the same regardless of transmitting mode. That is, if you select +10 dBm output power it is +10 dBm in CW, CW with modulation and packet mode. Note that if you use modulation you need a wider RBW (resolution bandwidth) on the spectrum analyzer to measure the output power compared to a an unmodulated signal. We use an unmodulated signal when measuring output power. If you use "zero span" on the spectrum you will get the total output power.
