RFID Solution

I am wanting to implement a RFID system into a current project. I want to place RFID readers in seats of a vehicle and the tags on people. The Readers need a read range of 2-3' but not much further, so that if a tag is picked up on the reader it can be identified and assigned to that seat location. The readers also need to be as small as possible as space is limited. The reader system will communicate with a microcontroller so I need a serial data output.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • Hi Chad,

We offer passive RFID in the LF(134.2kHz) and HF(13.56MHz) frequency ranges.  These use magnetic field coupling, so range of 2-3' is possible, but requires high output power readers and large antenna sizes.  For LF, I would recommend the RI-RFM-007B + RI-CTL-MB2B + Antenna.  I would not consider these modules small, but nothing that can acheive this range will be very small.  Depending on the size of the tag and reader antenna, this could reach the required range when the tag is in the correct orientation.  I have attached a range measurement document that should give you an idea of the range with our standard antenna products and tags.  Please understand that these measurements are made with the tag and reader optimally oriented.  As the orientation changes, read range could be reduced by 50-70% or possibly even more.  This is important to consider if the orientation of the tag is random.

If you can use an active system, the size can be reduced, but controlling the range to exactly 2-3' becomes more difficult.

  • Hi Chad,

As Eddie mentioned, if you did not rule out active solution then you can think about TI UHF band products which should enable you to get the read range of 2-3'  without putting any extra efforts and the reader size can be very small. Have a look at eZ430-RF2500  http://focus.ti.com/docs/toolsw/folders/print/ez430-rf2500.html
