Alternative to (expensive) ZigBee module

Hello. I'm new to working with electronic. We are working on a project where we have to controle RGB-LEDs wireless.

Right now we are using a Telegesis ETRX3-ZigBee module, but at a price of 20$ it is a expensive solution for us, so we are looking for a cheaper alternative.

can anybody help by pointing me in the direction of a cheaper solution?

required functions of the module:

- Have to be connected and controled from a windows or linux OS

 - min. 3 (preferable 6) controable output pins for controling the RGB LEDs

- a button / interrupter at the module wich can send a message back to the server when activated.

Thank you for your time....

  • Rasmus,

If you buy an off the shelf module the cost is typically high, however if you develop a product customised for your application the cost will be significantly lower, but you will have to invest in R&D, so it depends on the number of units you need (I assume if it is few thousends the it might be worth developing a custom product).

Regardless of that it seems that ZigBee is an overkill to your application and you may do with a simple point to point trasciever.
