Monopole antenna with wider board

Hi,
I have done a design with the CC1110 and a monopole antenna, like the "CC1110 minidevelopment kit reference board" and like DN024 design note, working in 868Mhz. The wide of my board is 63,5, it is  wider than the monopole antenna (the wide of CC1110 minidevelopment kit is 40 mm). Thus, the ground plane in the base of the antenna is wider (63,5 mm), and there is pcb dielectric  in both sides of the antenna. There are not any component in both sides of the antenna.

The DN024  specifies a length of 20 mm  for the last segment of the antenna (L4 in DN024) with 868 MHz. With the new board,  must the length be longer o shorter than 20 mm ?. How can i tuned the antenna?

  • Hi,

A larger ground plane generally means a shorter antenna. Note that the antenna on the CC1110 mini DK is tuned with the batteries in the holder. Platstic enscapsling etc will also affect the length of the antenna. To tune the antenna, the best way is to use a network analyzer. This is described in AN058  http://www.ti.com/lit/an/swra161b/swra161b.pdf. The bandwidth of the antenna can be measured with a spectrum analyzer. The way to do this measurement is also described in AN058, this measurement can also be used to see where the antenna resonate.
