CC1120 dev kit range question

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC1120, CC1190

Hi!

Just watched a TI video of CC1120 connectivity and noticed a slide claiming '10's of kms out of the box' performance which sounded very nice. I need only 1-2 kms so I wonder if this kit could provide me this connectivity range 'out-of-the-box'? Or I need to design an external PA circuit with CC1190? Thank you for the answer.

  • Hello,

I believe the test was done with very low data rate ( giving the best sensitivity)  and maximum programmable output power which gave a link budget of ~139dBM. Theoretically with this link budget you can get a link of more than 10km L-O-S in sub-1GHz operation. The video shows ~7km LOS link. You also need to  take into account that environment, height of antenna from ground, antenna solution etc greatly influence the measurements results. As shown in the video the transmitter was placed on top of a ski location which is more than 30m above ground. And there were no obstacles between the transmitter and the receiver.
