Dear,

We make some kind of portable media device, where we will have RFID reader also as module with PCB antenna. What I need to know. We need that at first so can read UID from cards that supported by TRF7970A, so ISO14443A, ISO14443B, ISO15693, Felica, .... all and NFC also, where our device should read NFC tags and in other scenario acts as NFC emulation mode, so emulate card. Important things is that we can read MIfare cards also, so please if has code provide us. We decided to use MSP430 MCU, so I found something like this MSP430F5171. Do you think that it is possible to fit in that MCU, cause I don't have experience with MSP430 MCUs and also we will use UART as output from that RFID module to host.

Hi Darko,

Yes, TRF7970A will support reading of ISO14443A/B, ISO 15693, Felica. The TRF7970AEVM firmware provides an example for reading these tag types. This was written for the MSP430F2370 and uses the UART to communicate with a Host PC via USB.

The TRF7970A will also support card emulation mode for ISO14443A/B. The app note and example code below describes the use of ISO 14443B card emualtion mode to simplify bluetooth pairing by including the bluetooth MAC address in an NDEF message. See appendix A for the specific steps for using ISO 14443B card emulation.

Dear Eddie,

Thanks for reply. Do you think that MCU that I want is suitable with 32KB Flash to implement all that. I think it is not big problem to transfer code from MSP430F2370 to MSP430F5171. I will use also UART.

There will be some changes required to use this code with the TRF7970A. The TRF7960 requires a polarity change of SCLK when read operation is executed, while the TRF7970A does not require this. TRF7970A requies a soft init (0x03) command to start the communication, while the TRF7960 does not. You will also need to set the registers for the TRF7970A appropriately as they do differ some from the TRF7960. For example, register 0x09 defaults to using a 27.12MHz crystal and TRF7960 does not have this option.
