PTN04050A: Request for Support: DC Converter Not Meeting Avionics Testing Conditions

Part Number: PTN04050A

Tool/software:

We recently procured your Non Isolated DC converter model [PTN04050AAH] for use in an avionics application. During our qualification testing, we observed that the unit is not meeting the following performance conditions:

1. 48 Hrs burn in test @65 Deg c, -5V@0.5A & -12V@0.4A
2. Pre Vibration @ 8g 5min each (X,Y,Z Axis)
3. Thermal Cycling -40 Deg C 1Hr,  +65 Deg C 1Hr, Total 13 cycles
4. Post Vibration @ 8g 5min each (X,Y,Z Axis)
5. 8 Hrs endurance test at ambient temperature
6. The whole LRU testing takes another 8 Hrs at ambient temperature

Given the critical nature of this application, we would appreciate your immediate assistance in identifying the root cause and providing guidance to resolve these issues. Kindly let us know if there are any recommended configuration changes, documentation updates, or diagnostic procedures that could support our effort.

  • Hi Dinesh,

What is the failure you observe? This part is marked as obsolete (no longer in production) on it's product page and is not recommended for new designs.

If you let me know you input / output voltage and load current specs, I can check for a suitable part.

    Best regards,

    Varun

  • Hi varun,

I hope you did not understand the Concern we bought this PTN module and gave it to our customer which is used in aerospace application and below are the testing standards for durability of this module. so could you please check and let me know if the below testing standards are suitable for this model or not

    1. 48 Hrs burn in test @65 Deg c, -5V@0.5A & -12V@0.4A

• Hi Dinesh,

This device has been obsoleted since 2021. Can you let me know when you have procured this part? If this is being qualified at your customer for a new application, it is not recommended to do so. We can recommend newer parts if you let us know the operating conditions.

I checked the qualification tests done for this part. The qual tests and conditions run on this part at TI are not exactly like the ones you mentioned. Here are my comments for the tests you mentioned.

    1. 48 Hrs burn in test @65 Deg c, -5V@0.5A & -12V@0.4A - PTN04050A has passed 1000 hours of testing at Vin=3.3V, Vout=-5V and load=1A and 720C case temperature
    2. Pre Vibration @ 8g 5min each (X,Y,Z Axis) - PTN04050A has passed vibration at 15g.
    3. Thermal Cycling -40 Deg C 1Hr,  +65 Deg C 1Hr, Total 13 cycles -Device has passed 200 temperature cycles from -40C to +125C, dwelling15-minutes at
    each temperature extreme

    4. Post Vibration @ 8g 5min each (X,Y,Z Axis) - PTN04050A has passed vibration at 15g.
    5. 8 Hrs endurance test at ambient temperature - Device has passed 1000 hours of testing at Vin=3.3V, Vout=-5V and load=1A and 720C case temperature
    6. The whole LRU testing takes another 8 Hrs at ambient temperature  Device has passed 1000 hours of testing at Vin=3.3V, Vout=-5V and load=1A and 720C case temperature

    Best regards,
