MSP430FE427 + CC2431 UART communication problem

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430FE427, CC2431, CC2430, CC2500

Hi

My problem relates to Serial port communication between MSP430FE427 & CC2431. I need to send some data (characters)through serial port in UART mode to CC2431 and then, it will again be sent to other zigbee devices using mesh. Presently MSP430FE427 is able to send data to a computer system (PC). A PC to CC2431 EM through serial port communication is also OK. But from MSP430FE427 to CC2431 is not working properly. Please Help me.] [Steps Needed to Recreate Problem: Serial port Communication MSP430FE427 ------------------> PC System -- OK PC System ----------------------> CC2431 -- OK MSP430FE427 -------------------> CC2431 -- Not OK All the configuration settings are set at 38400, 8 bits -No Parity-1 stop bit - No Flow control - same for all devices. Oscilloscope waveforms: PC data is at a level of -10V with positive pulses(data) with a height of 23.2 Volts. (+13.2 V above ground) MSP430FE427 data is at a level of +3.2V with negative pulses(data) with height of 3.2V (upto ground)

  • Hi Ashok.

So you are saying that it works fine with serial port communication between MSP430 <--> PC, and CC2431 <-->PC, but not between MSP430 <--> CC2431. Since you are not using the flow control, a problem with the UART CTS and RTS coupling should be out of the question. But could it be as simple as that you have not gotten the UART TX and RX lines crossed properly? E.g. a problem so that the RX pin on one chip isn't connected to TX pin on the other, and vice versa?

Could you perhaps list which I/O pins on the MSP430 and on the CC2431 you are using for the UART interface, and which ones that are connected together? I think your reported signal voltages seems okay, though.

(In case you suspect the problem to be related to the CC2431, I recommend you to have a look at "DN112 -- Using UART in CC111xFx CC243x and CC251xFx" (swra222a). It describes the setup of the CC2431 UART interface quite in detail, and also shows connections between chip<->chip and chip<->PC.)

  • Hi,

I want to test my CC2430EM,(small pcb with CC2430) without help of SRF04EB (Testing Board ). I downloaded my code into CC2431 with Flash programmer. But when I remove the CC2431 from the EB, and I gave power separately. but the EM is not working.

How can I test my EM without using SRF04EB

  • The /RESET line on the CCxxxxEMs is driven by the SmartRF04 board and left floating when it is unplugged from the SmartRF04 board . Obviously this line must be pulled up for the device to operate when off the the SmartRF04 board. Note: When returning to the SmartRF04 board to flash or test the EM module, any pull up or bias you have added must be removed or  the SmartRF04 board will not work.

  • eZ430-RF2500T Reference Design

  • You can find the hardware design files for the eZ430-RF2500 on its webpage here. But you should note that these design files are NOT intended for use as reference design. This is also stated in the included readme file.

You should instead use one of the reference designs for CC2500, available here, which will give you better RF performance.
