How to select frequency band for new design?

Yes it depends on regulations in different countries.

Yes it depends on desired data rates and power consumption.

But, is there systemized guide for selection of optimal ISM frequency band for low power RF link that takes into account all variables?

  • I not aware of a systemized guide and hopefully someone will post a link to one.

I selected 900MHz for the added range and  much better performance in commercial steel and concrete buildings.  2.4GHz tends to be a little more "line of sight" and 5.8GHz is very LOS. While not based on published data we have found there are fewer potential interferers in the 900MHz band when we have made field measurements in congested areas and urban canyons with a spectrum analyzer. Between microwave ovens and wifi there is a lot in the 2.4GHz band At 900MHz we see a few cordless phones and garage door and entry door openers and these items tend to be narrow band and low duty cycle..

  • Also, consider allowed bandwidth, transmission power and certification issues, for example, the 433 band is available both in north America and in Europe, but with different maximum EIRP limitations.

Certification for ETSI in the 433 band is also stricter with more requirements than the FCC in the 433 band.
