CC2480+CC2591 Reference Design

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2591, CC2430, Z-STACK

Can anyone provide an estimate of when a reference design will be available for using the CC2591 RF Front End with the CC2480 Zigbee Processor?

I tried designing such a board myself, but have run into some serious problems, which I believe to be coming from board layout/impedance matching.  The board can communicate over RF to another board acting as a network coordinator, but only with the antenna (SMA) removed.  Once the antenna is placed back on, the circuit shorts out and the behavior is very erratic and communication fails.

  • Hi RF4CE,

Did you compare your design with CC2430 + CC2591 and checking application note AN063?

  • LPRF,

Thanks, I did follow these design notes.  However, I did use the 1.8V Supply to drive the EN and PAEN signals on the CC2591.  The CC2480 is very optimized fo rlow power and the 1.8V supply is only briefly enabled prior to sending messages.  I suspect that I need to use a MCU pin to drive this signals so that I can give the PA more time to start up before the message is sent.  Does this make sense or is this not likely an issue?

  • Hi RFCE,

Yes it can be timing related. As you stated with the application notes, please also check out the one below:

This will require you to use a CC2480 GPIO pin through the 6.1.11 SYS_GPIO command to control CC2591 mode of operation similar to the CC2430 way of operating the CC2591 RF Front End

Try also the SYS_RF_TEST interface to see if you are able to get a modulated or unmodulated spectrum output of the CC2591 using the CC2480 with your design to investigate your match and output power with a spectrum analyzer

This can provide you with some more hints.

(I have not tested this, just another idea)
