Ultra low power SMS sending (energy harvesting)

Hello,

I'am looking for a way to send SMS on a energy harvesting powered device.

I know that any GSM module one the market cant suit my needs.

Basically I wants to : when there is enough power on the big capacitor, connect to a GSM network, send an SMS, and shutdown.

But I have seen somes chips from TI that can be used to do this. For example in the LoCosto serie, or the

CS2010 chip.

But It seems to be a very closed world, all datasheet seems "top secret". I cant found any data nor samples on this chips.

Can you give me any advice ?

Thank you !

Julien

  • Julien,

That device is only sold to certain companies, but one of them is module company that makes a module available using this device.

  • Hi,

the minimum operating voltage of a GSM-module is about 3.2 V and the consumption current (subject to 2 W of output power) during the transmission exceeds 1 A. So, the capacitor should be quite big to provide the corresponding energy.

As I know, the CDMA-technology requires less power to operate.

  • In Europe there is no CDMA network.

But maybe, with EDGE, 2G 3G 4G ... or other new network can need lees power to use.

It seems that the power needed to send an SMS is a lot depending of the network signal level. So if I use a big Yagi antenna it can be a lot better.

  • Subject to the GSM (aka EDGE, GPRS and 2G) usage , you could try to reduce the power of consumption by decreasing of the maximum output power ( by setting the power class to 5, i.e. to 800 mW at GSM900, for example) and by operating with the directional antennas. However, the solution will be very location dependant.

What kind of capacitors are you going to use? Have you estimated the capacity required?

The 3G (UMTS/HSDA in Europe) network has the CDMA technology in its core. So, the situation with the energy required may be better there.
