CC1101: same design , different manufacture result totally different performance

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC1101

Hi,

We have trouble to figure out the why. It's exactly same design and we sent to two different manufactures. But the RF performance is totally different. one is good and the other cannot talk to each other.

We get some RF measurements and notice one has much broader spectrum bandwidth. does anyone know what's the possible reasons? Thanks.

  • Hi,

Have you tried swapping components between the boards from the different manufactures to see if they might have mounted a wrong component (that would not be the first time)? Or tried to swap chips between the boards to see whether it follows the chip or the PCB?

  • Not try that yet. CC1101 is very hard to taken out and re-solder without damaging it manually  because of the low ESD voltage. But each batch has over 20pcs and we measures 10+ cards and all behave the same ( one has much broader spectrum than the other). Based on your experience, do you know anything possible cause this? Thanks.

  • You see that the boards from the different manufactures have a different center frequency as well so something is very wrong. I would double check the XTALs and xtal load capacitors (I am sure they are meant to be the same, but we have seen several times in the past that manufactures may use the wrong component value). Also check that the chip is grounded as supposed to (remove the chip to see if they have solder paste underneath as supposed to).
