SmartRF Sniffer doesn't detect CC2540EMK-USB (Bluetooth LE)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2540EMK-USB, CC2540

I just ordered a CC2540EMK-USB kit from Digikey and installed the SmartRF Protocol Packet Sniffer on a Windows XP 32-bit machine (SP2) with USB 2.0 ports.

Unfortunately, the sniffer software does not show the CC2540 when I select "Bluetooth Low Energy" and start that sniffer program.

Under Windows Device Manager, I see the USB trident and then "Cebal controlled devices". A singular child node of this has another USB trident and then "CC2540 USB dongle". I have tried updating the driver with the one found in the C:\Program Files\Texas Instruments\SmartRF Tools\Drivers\cebal\win_32bit_x86\cebal2.inf

Also, multiple reboots and plug/unplug permutations have not solved the problem.

Could my CC2540EMK-USB have come from the factory without the proper firmware loaded on it? Argh, frustration!

  • Try to find sniffer FW sniffer_fw_cc2540_usb.hex for your dongle under C:\Program Files\Texas Instruments\SmartRF Tools\Packet Sniffer\bin\general\firmware. It should be available after you install Packet Sniffer. Flash it into your usb dongle and have a try.
