RFID reader with external antenna

Dear everyone,

I was looking for an RFID HF 14443 reader and I found your TRF7970AT and it looks great but I need a larger antenna.

You have an UFL connector on the board so maybe I can plug a larger antenna. What would be the larger antenna able to be connected.(have enough power because we don't want a dead zone in the middle)

Moreover, I would be interested in any HF 14443 reader you can have. So if I missed one , I would be happy to get his datasheet.

    the TRF7960, -60A, -63A, -64A and -70A are all ISO14443A reader/writer ICs. 

    Regarding your question about the external and possibly larger antenna, to connect one to the -ATB, you need to remove C23 and then connect to the U.FL, as you have already guessed. To connect one to the -AEVM, you need to remove R3, install a through hole or edge mount SMA connector and then connect your antenna. In both cases the antenna connected should be 50 ohms impedance @ 13.56MHz and be a Q value of ~8 for ISO14443A reading.

    The question back is what size tag antenna and which tag silicon would you be using. or you can just point to an assembled device for helping figure out the approximate range you will see.

    for example, if you have a look at section 12 (page 19) of the TRF7970ATB user manual, http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slou372/slou372.pdf, I did put in some observed read ranges with three different protocols and multiple sized tags, to give you an idea of what i am looking for in order to be able to assist you correctly.

    If I well understand, I can use an SMA connector just removing R3. 

    When I asked for a larger antenna (connected on the sma connector), in fact, I want a large read zone but not particularly a far one. I'm trying to read wristband bracelets and I would prefer to scan this bracelet in a 200x200mm area than targeting a 50x50mm one.

    Maybe you know the maximal size your module can support and maybe you also know and good antenna who fits to these requirements.

    the first one is the only one i see in stock - the last one would be the largest i would connect up for what you described.

    other vendor might be DLP Design, too - and you can contact them for a "variety pack" of PCB antennas i know they make but are not on their website. make sure you ask for normal sma, not the reverse one.

    regarding the TRF7960AEVM or the TRF7970AEVM and R3, yes, that is correct, just remove R3 to disconnect onboard antenna and install SMA or connect coax from 50 ohm (at 13.56MHz antenna) to center conductor hole and GND to GND.

    2. Does the reader come with any diagnostic / utility software (Windows) so we can test the reader?

    3. What work is involved in adding the Lantronix XPort Pro to the TRF7970A?

  • i think folks have used the TRF7970AEVM in Linux and Mac...not 100% on that (at least on the Mac side)

    the NFCLink solution is able to work with Windows XP, 7 and 8, Linux (Ubuntu) and Android. We have not checked it in Mac, although i imagine it would work running in a compatibility mode.

    Both version of the EVMs have GUIs for your testing.  

    the Lantronix device looks pretty cool - thanks for showing that -  it looks like a fairly resource rich device. I would imagine we could load the available OS stack on there, its a new configuration idea on me, but i think its doable.
