SmartRF packet sniffer not showing captured packages

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2540, CC2541

Hi. I am trying to get some packets of the BLE in the sensor tag (for learning purposes). I have flashed the sniffer_fw_cc2540_usb.hex in the usb dongle, and opened the Packet Sniffer, and the devices is the capture device list, but when i starts the packets capturing (F5), the main window remains in gray color,

I am using a laptop with W7 ultimate x64, i have a lot of other programs installed (many of TI included). Is there any known reason for this error?

I have tried with a All in One PC wit W8 single language, and there, with the same hardware (cc2541 keyfob an sensor tag), i get the the dongle working as sniffer.

Thanks for your help. I dont want to carry with the AIO pc,

  • Hi Oscar,

Does the packet counter in the lower left corner of the sniffer window (in the status bar) count upwards?

Can you try to delete the registry keys for the packet sniffer using regedit? Delete all keys under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Texas Instruments\Packet Sniffer.

Alternatively, re-install the packet sniffer (get the latest version from the web).

  • Yes, it was counting up when a broadcast devices was on. I have reinstalled several times but it din't work.

I have solved the problem  in a very weird way. I had to change some options in the settings tab, but i dont know which one was:

    Toggle "Broadcast enable"

change buffer size from 20MB to 100 MB (arbitrary):

Anyway, that has solved the problem. Thanks for your answer!

  • I agree, very weird. Good that you got it working, though. It must have been one of the configuration parameters of the tool that prevented proper display, and the fact that you modified some of them reverted that particular setting. I assume you didn't try to delete the registry keys for the tool?

Note that if you had selected "Broadcast only" in the "Packet Broadcast" dialog window, you would not have seen any packets in the GUI.
