RF430CL330H: Antenna design guide line

Dear All,

Please let me confirm the following question.

[Question]

Are you preparing the antenna design guide for RF430CL330H?

And do you have a solution for the housing of the metal? If the system is the housing of the metal, the design of RF will be difficult for us.  So, we would like to know whether you have a solution of RF design.

Best regards,

Kaka

  • Hello Kaka,

Yes, the antenna design guide is in draft form right now.  We should be releasing this to the web in the next couple of weeks.

If the antenna will be placed on a metal housing, there are a couple options.

    1. Provide seperation from the metal.  I suggest at least 3mm seperation.  You would then follow the same steps for tuning with the measurement of the antenna coil "in situ" to tune with the proper antenna characteristics.
    2. Provide a ferrite shield between the metal and the antenna coil.  This allows you to place the antenna directly on metal.  Tuning procedure is the same.  Measure coil characteristics "in situ" and then tune based on these characteristics.
  • Hi Eddie,

Thank you for your response. I will use your explanation as reference.

Regarding to the options for metal housing, will you show in antenna design guide?

And if you are releasing this documents, please let me know.

    Best regards.

  • Hi Eddie,

I have some questions for your answers.  Please let me confirm them.

    [Question.1]

Regarding to the option.1, can NFC communicate with the reader/writer even though the Antenna and tag chip are in metal housing?

    [Question.2]

If possible, would you please provide the image of those options which you have suggested?

I would like to confirm whether the meaning of my question was understood by you.

    [Question.3]

In your solutions, should we mount the antenna in outside of metal housing?

If you have any questions, please let me know.

    Best regards.

    Kaka

  • Hi Kaka,

The antenna design app note will have some mention of environmental factors, but will not provide deep details of designing in such an environment.  It is intended as a general design/tuning guide.  Please see my other answers below.

Regarding to the option.1, can NFC communicate with the reader/writer even though the Antenna and tag chip are in metal housing?  No, the metal will act as a shield.  The antenna must be on the outside of the metal.

If possible, would you please provide the image of those options which you have suggested? Sure, see the attached pictures.

In your solutions, should we mount the antenna in outside of metal housing? Yes, the antenna should be mounted outside of the metal housing.
