CC2530 Range

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2530, CC2530EM, CC2511

Hi All,

What is maximum distance we can achieve with CC2530 EM..?

I have tested with CC2530DK kit but  it works only 40m in LOS, above this range it gives more than 90% packet error rate..

while testing I set the Tx power to 4dB  and  I selected  the channel 11...

what is the max Tx power we can select in CC2530EM,is it 20dB or 4dB..?

in the range test TI said range can go up to 400m in LOS,is it really possible ..?

pls help me...

  • Hello Chethan kp,

We have tested the CC2530EM several times and get at least 400m of LOS (0% PER) with 4dBm (maximum) output power. You can even get better range than that with another antenna. Here is a video of the range test we did in Oslo last summer:

Try to change the channel incase you have interference on the channel you are using, you should also clean the antenna connectors.

If you have a CC2511 you can use this tool to check if there are any interference in the 2.4GHz band:

  • Hi,

I have removed the discrete components at the RF part for CC2530EM and put the balun 24530BM15A0002

    ,.

    ,.

            will it work fine..?

will it reduce the range of EM..?

    regards

  • Hello Chethan,

I guess you mean the 2450BM15A0002 (Balun from Johanson Technology), if you follow the reference design, http://focus.ti.com/general/docs/litabsmultiplefilelist.tsp?literatureNumber=swra297, it should work perfectly.

This should reduce the range a little, as the link budget with the balun reference design is approximately 1.6 dB worse then the CC2530EM reference design (1.2 dB lower output power (TXPOWER=0xF5) and 0.4 dB less sensitivity).

On the other side you would be less prone to layout influence as this balun design is very compact, which may improve performance.

  •  Hi,

Yes ,I wanted to know about this part only 2450BM15A0002..

I have designed the ckt with this balun, now i have got the PCB and all but i'm not getting this balun from any distributor.

Can I use any other balun(which works in same frequency) for design..?

if you know any vendor pls provide the details of them...

    regards

    chethan

  • Hi,

to my knowledge Digi-Key is providing the part from Johanson, however you can use other vendors as for instance Murata, Anaren, but these baluns are not made especially for the CC2530 as the Johanson balun so you might have to do some impedance matching.

  • Hi,

Due to unavailabilty of  the balun 2450BM15A0002(2.45 GHz Matched Balun / LPF: Optimized for TI Chipset CC2530 and 2531 P/N 2450BM15A0002)

I have selected the following balun.

pls let me know will this work fine with CC2530EM thanks.

  • Hi,

Sorry ,In the lost post I frogot to metion the part which i have select.

    Here is the balun

    Part Number :                        LDB182G4520C-110

    Frequency Range (MHz)    : 2450.0 ±50.0MHz

    Insertion Loss I)(dB)            : 1.3 max. (at 25°C)

Insertion Loss II) (dB)         : .4 max. (-40~+85°C)

    Unbalance Impedance
    (Nom.) (ohm)                         :50

    Balance Impedance
    (Differential) (Nom.)
    (ohm)                                       :200

pls let me know will this work fine with CC2530EM

    thanks
