NFC/RFID identification at high speed movement

We are exploring active RFID/NFC kind of solution for identifying objects moving on a conveyor belt. We would like to understand what are the limitations regarding communicating with tags on moving objects? Any reference solutions good for starting on such a project?

  • this is classic RFID application use case. You can use LF (usually ISO11784/785), HF (usually ISO15693) or UHF (usually ISO18000-6c). the basic limitations of the implementation are rooted around how fast the belt is moving, how far away the tags are from the reader antenna, orientation of the tags being read to the reader antenna, how close the tags are to each other, what is in the boxes or containers that are tagged, how many tags need to be read at once and cost targets of the system as a whole. Its important to think about the return on the investment here, because that is what it is - an investment in technology to enable a measurable gain somewhere else for the investor. (if you can project that the RFID tracking system will pay you back a period of time that you are comfortable with, then it makes sense to implement) 

    i wrote this app note centered around using LF specifically for waste management - so its clearly biased, but it might be a good primer for you to read on the differences of the technologies available. 

     

    once you can provide details around the general application questions i posed above, then we can discuss further on details which point you in the direction which benefits you.

    Just FYI, the belt will move at about 60 feet per second, and there will be just 2-3 objects per second. We understand that we need to identify the suitable technology ourselves. What we were seeking is general guidelines, which you have provided.
