CC2650: Bypassing Debugger on Launchpad to Download Firmware

Do you give proper power to your CC2650?

If you use Flash Programmer 2 to download FW, does it work?

All Jumpers on P4 removed All Jumpers on P4 removed except the GND, 5V and 3V3 ones

P7: GPIOs (J4):
RST ---------------------------------> BPRST
TDI ---------------------------------> DIO 17
TDO --------------------------------> DIO 16
TCK --------------------------------> TCK
TMS --------------------------------> TMS


I am creating my own board using the CC2650 and I don't want to include the debugger so I am using this test to see if I can pull out the Jtag pins and program it with an external debugger, if there's an easier way that would also be great.

What is BPRST and do you power your CC2650 on custom board?

Its the reset pin on the launchpad. Is my wiring correct?

The board will be powered with a CR2032 coin cell.

Arsh: Could you send a detail picture of how you have done the connection? I have done this a lot using the 1.27 mm pitch JTAG connectors (XDS out/ CC1310 in) and that works perfectly.

If I'm not mistaken you have to solder on 0 ohm resistors to be able to do it as indicated on the right hand picture. Why not use the P4 connection alternative?

Are you talking about using TXD AND RXD instead?
Would that require removing all the headers except TXD and RXD?

No. If you look at the board and the PCB you will see that the JTAG interface is not directly connected to J2 but the same pins are available on P4 (still will all the jumpers removed)

Use the JTAG interface but use a different connector.

I need to be able to program the chip on my board, so if I just pull out the JTAG interface and connect to it using the debugger I should theoretically be able to flash the image so thats why i was trying to use J2. However, I did try using P4 instead of J2 and got the same error message.

This raises another question: how can I flash an image without having a debugger on my board? Would UART TXD and RXD work? or should I pull out just JTAG pins and I should be ok.

If you use CC13xx serial boot loader which you can refer to www.ti.com/.../swra466a.pdf , you can use UART TX/RX to download binary to CC13xx.

When you connect to P4, do you see CC1310 in SmartRF Studio/ Flashprogrammer 2?

As YK points out you can use a serial bootloader. But if you want to flash your board in production you can have an external XDS and just connect it in production.
