TRF7970A: NFC max distance

Part Number: TRF7970A

Hello, what max distance can be reached with acitve or passive communication if the TRF7970A is in TAG mode. Is 1m possible? A big antenna is no problem for customer.

Regards, Holger

  • Hello Holger,

If the TRF7970A is in tag mode, than the distance is dependent on their reader set up.

Active vs passive won't really help with this - but if anything they would want to use passive as the TRF7970A definitely can't do anything even close to that as an active P2P device. You'd be lucky to get 10cm in 'Active' mode with it.

As far as 1m goes... they'd need a hell of a reader to do that. Likely something high powered from Feig. Usually you are looking at 5-10cm range for Passive P2P or Card Emulation with the TRF7970A.
  • we mention in our presentation a range up to 1m

  • this is the presenting the technology (ISO15693)

to get this kind of read range with it, one would need to use high power finished reader and large antennas (like from Feig, see their LR2500 reader and 600mm x 800mm gate) and ID-1 sized (full credit card size) transponders. this would be the basis of a system which can achieve this sort of distance.

  • Hello Holger,

What you are missing is that the presentation is discussing the standard as a whole, not our devices. Per the standard for ISO15693 which is one of many HF RFID standards, it is possible to reach 1 meter of read range as Josh described.

For our devices, this is not even close to being possible. You specifically asked about the TRF7970A as a "Tag" device. For this, the device supports ISO14443A and ISO14443B for Card Emulation and NFC-A and NFC-F for Peer to Peer Passive Target. None of these are known to hit such ranges - usually 10cm or less.

If the TRF7970A was a READER device, and read credit card sized ISO15693 tags with a larger antenna tuned to a high Q factor and operating at 5V, you'd max out around ~25 cm still.
