Making a packet sniffer from Launchpads or Boosterpacks not CC2540EMK-USB

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2540EMK-USB, CC-DEBUGGER, CC2540, CC2650

If I understand correctly it is not possible to program and debug a CC2540EMK-USB without a CC-Debugger and an IAR compiler and I wondered if it would be relatively easy to get some other Bluetooth development board from TI to do the same thing.

  • For BLE packet sniffing, a CC2540USB or SmartRF05 + EM is required. You do not need IAR to program the dongle with the TI packet sniffer application, only the CC Debugger is required. Please see the Packet Sniffer user guide on the TI BLE Wiki.

  • I thought the CC2540EMK-USB dongle comes preprogrammed as a packet sniffer so the CC-debugger would not be needed if no additional programming were desired? I'm trying to get to the least expensive method to find out why the Windows SensorTag app from clovett does not seem to work in my W8.1 environment yet does in W10.

  • I think you have told buy a CC Debugger and it costs US50 which isn’t too much.
  • www.ti.com/.../CC2540EMK-USB :
    "Description

The CC2540 USB Evaluation Module Kit contains one CC2540 Bluetooth low energy USB Dongle. The dongle can be used to enable Bluetooth low energy on your PC. It can also be used as a packet sniffer for analyzing the BLE protocol and for software and system level debugging (use the free tool SmartRF Packet Sniffer). The dongle comes preprogrammed as a packet sniffer.

To program and debug software running on the dongle, you need the CC Debugger (not included in the kit)."

I guess if the CC-Debugger is needed to be a packet sniffer, the product page needs revision.
  • The CC2540USB description is correct, however, I'm not sure if it's the latest revision of the BLE packet sniffer application. In any event, the CC Debugger is essential if you want to debug/develop on the CC254x platform.

  • If I had a CC-debugger and you released an updated sniffer, then and only then I could program it? That would be useful but the iar tools to program would most likely be out of my budget. My interest was more for the CC2640R2 and the cc2650.
  • You can get the latest sniffer FW for CC2540EMK-USB if you install latest packet sniffer. You can find sniffer_fw_cc2540_usb.hex under C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\SmartRF Tools\Packet Sniffer\bin\general\firmware and you can download it to CC2540EMK-USB using Flash Programmer with CC-Debugger.
