Help setting up RFID reader, need read/write software please!

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TRF7970A

Hi, I am a student at UVM and i am a tech noob. I wanted to start a project to be able to detect 13.56mhz tags at an extended range. I have purchased a DLP RFID2D device i have a sma to u.fl connector. I also ordered a HF 13.56mhz antenna, its supposed set to 50 ohms by default. Also, the devices website directs me to a download page for a read/write software but I do not know which link(s) to follow. Any help would be appreciated thank you.

  • Hello Basam,

What range are you wanting to achieve?
  • I would like to achieve a range greater than 24cm. I have a an Andea ANT02 13.56mhz loop antenna with a max power of 6w.
  • Hello Basam,

Achieving a range that large with the TRF7970A would require the use of an external power amplifier. TI does not support applications that involve external power amplifiers.

I suggest you either review your project requirements with your professor and find a means to lower the range to 10cm or less, or investigate other solutions. If you are new to this technology, a power amplifier is very far out of reach for you to achieve, design for such takes many years of engineering and RF experience.

    Best of luck.
  • Thank you for the feedback. I have another question if you dont mind. I have purchased this DLP RFID2D reader/writer and I was wondering how I would be able to read tags with. The website tells me to download trf7970a gui but i cant get it to read. Do i need other components for my reader? The website says that it does have a built in antenna. Any help would be awesome thank you.

  • Hello Basam,

I am not familiar with that module at all. I know it mentions E2E for support, but that's really for technical issues with the device as inside the module is the TI TRF7970A. I don't know enough about how the module is supposed to work to offer help. That said, I'll send this post to the DLP folks.
  • Basam,

Please direct your tech support questions for DLP-RFID2D to support@dlpdesign.com.

The URL for the download page is printed on the product packaging.  A COM port should appear in Device Manager once you connect the RFID2D to the host PC.  From there you simply run the TI GUI from the download page, select the correct tab, click Set Protocol and then Execute to read tags.
