TRF7970A: TRF7970A and MSP430G2553 GUI problem

Part Number: TRF7970A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: RF430FRL152HEVM, MSP430G2553, , UNIFLASH

Hi, everyone,

I try to use the RF430FRL152HEVM Windows GUI to connect MSP430G2553 + 7970A.

I program the MSP430G2553 with TRF7970A_BoosterPack_MSP430G2.out in "sloc346\MSP430G2 LP TRF7970ABP Host Control Binary\Firmware\Debug".

However, when I push the "connect to TRF7970ABP + MSP430G2553" on the windows GUI, the software stopped responding.

Can anyone help me to fix the problem? Thanks a lot!

  • Hello Jiaming,

Have you power cycled the MSP430 LaunchPad after loading the firmware? The firmware won't run until the board is power cycled.

Also do you have the jumpers placed correctly? This is shown in Figure 3 of the EVM User's Guide: www.ti.com/.../slau607c.pdf
  • Hi,Ralph

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I try both unplug it for several minutes or push the reset button. Also, I read the manual carefully and check the jumper settings(RXD,RTD horizontal).

It's quite weird when I push the connection button on windows GUI it just doesn't respond. I can't switch the tab either. However, when I unplug the board it suddenly response.

  • Hello Jiaming,

Which version of the GUI are you using? And on what Operating System?

Have you confirmed the COM port displayed in the GUI is equivalent to the COM port displayed on Device Manager for the MSP-EXP430G2 LaunchPad?
  • Hi, Ralph

I use GUI version 1.3.1.0 on windows 10 system. Yes, I check the COM port, also I can use the uniflash to program MSP430G2553 correctly through the same COM port.

    Best,
    Jiaming
  • Hello Jiaming,

    Thank you for the details!

I did some testing in that environment with the same GUI and software binary and did observe the issue. The two workarounds I found which seem to work reliably is

    1) Run the RF430FRL152HEVM GUI in Compatibility Mode for Windows 7.

    2) Use the Autoconnect feature rather than manually selecting a COM port.

Please see if one or both of these work for you.
  • Hi, Ralph

    Thank you for your attempts.

I have tried all the possible combinations of your suggestions. Unfortunately, it seems still doesn't work on my computer. I wonder if there is any log file that can help me to figure it out?

    Best,

    Jiaming

  • Hello Jiaming,

I would suggest trying to restart your computer and perhaps also uninstall the EVM GUI before you do so and then try and reinstall it.

Beyond that, I don't have any other suggestions as we haven't had this issue come up in manner that was not able to be resolved with either of the presented steps.

Unfortunately the GUI was developed in Windows 7 environment and we do not have any plans to update it. I bring this up as potentially the issue could be related to being built on Windows 7 vs Windows 10.
