RF37S114: Maximum Read Range question

Part Number: RF37S114

RF gurus - This is a question for one of my customers.

I have read the following e2e post () as well as the “Reader Antenna Optimization for Reading the RF37S114” document ()

and that document seems to be saying the tag is going to max out at about 1.5 cm read range.  Is that the best I can expect from this part?  "We are hoping for more like 2 inches."

The protocol of the part is ISO 15693, and this protocol is intended for extended read ranges, like up to 1 meter.  They are called “vicinity” tags rather than “proximity” tags.  Using a standard reader (about 1.5”x1” area), and I am limited to 1/4 inch read distance – probably due to the small tag area, but the customer wants to know if longer range is possible with a better reader.

Thanks!

  • Hello Mark,

Yes pretty much. In theory with an amplifier you might get more, but that tag is designed to be used in sub 1 cm situations. If the customer needs a small form factor tag, they should get a custom one made by groups like SAG or SmarTrac.

The protocol is designed for longer ranges, but this specific tag design is limited in range due to the minuscule form factor. It is useful for certain applications where read range can be that small, and is not meant to show off the power of ISO15693.
