Wi-SUN for low power applications?

For TI's Wi-SUN solution, are the leaf nodes capable of operating in low power mode so it sleeps most of the time, and only wakes up to transmit when requested?

No.

The Wi-SUN FAN Spec does not specify a sleepy node (yet), thus we don't have a sleepy node implementation in the TI Wi-SUN FAN Stack.

Hi Haifan,

The FAN 1.1 spec has not yet been published and I don't know when it will be. You can try to reach out to the Wi-SUN Alliance about this.

Can we use an external MCU to control your device to put it to sleep and only wake up for transmission?

Hi Haifan,

You can not control directly when the device wakes up or transmits, but you may be able to turn the whole Wi-SUN operation on and off.

I will check with our SW developers whether it's possible to do this without loosing the connection to the Wi-SUN network.

How often do you expect to send information in your use-case?

Hi Haifan,

It's currently not possible to maintain the connection to the Wi-SUN network if you switch off the radio for an extended period of time.

If you want to "pause" the Wi-SUN operation, you will need to repeat the association process and connect to the network each time you want to send data.

Hi Haifan,

Since Wi-SUN FAN is a freuency hopping network, there is no deterministic value for how long the association process takes. However we usually see between 10-15 minutes when we use the 50 kbps PHY. (If you use a faster PHY the process might be slightly quicker.)
