CC-ANTENNA-DK2: Helical Antenna for 868MHz application

Part Number: CC-ANTENNA-DK2

Hello

I would like to integrate the antenna #6 of the CC-ANTENNA-DK2 kit into my design. However, this antenna #6 seems to have one turn less than the helical antenna from the design note DN038.

First: Why is there a difference in the two designs? Both should be made for 868 MHz communication.

Second: Which one would fit better for my application where the (carrier) frequency is 868 MHz?

Thank you very much in advance,

Michael

  • The helix antenna has an issue that could make it difficult to use in practical applications: The vias in the helix is part of the length and since the PCB thickness could vary with 10 % the length of the antenna will be different from board to board. You can risk getting an untuned (poor) antenna on a percentage of your boards.

  • Hi TheGhostOf
Thanks for the answer. Of course this will change the antenna characteristics; I'm aware of this. But that's not what I want to know ;-)
I just want to know what the difference is, i.e. why there exist two "almost identical" antenna designs... and which one I should preferably put on my design.

    Best regards,
    Michael

  • The preferred length of the antenna will also depend on the ground plane size which I believe is the difference between the two designs you are referring to.
