LAUNCHXL-CC1310: Trying to decode 433.92MHz Data from Jansite TPMS transmitters

I am working on a project to read TPMS data using the CC1310 and or CC1101/CC110L as a receiver.

I'm working with a TPMS sensor that broadcasts on 433.92MHz frequency.

I chose a sensor that has already been decoded in the open source library RTL_433.

My issue is when I do a packet receive on the CC1310 the data is completely different than the (golden data) from RTL-433.

I have access to the source code for RTL-433 and it appears the received bits are processed by

(1) Manchester Decoding the bitstream

(2) Inverting the bitstream.

I have used Manchester mode on the CC1101 and CC110L and inverted all the received bits manually in my text files of the output.

I can provide the full source code from RTL-433 if needed.

Based on the working source code from RTL-433 I see the preamble bits of the TPMS datastream are 0xA6, 0xA6, 0xA6 and the sync bytes are 0xDD, 0x33. 

Essentially I am unsure why I can not find the desired string (8a5c24055000086c6a) anywhere in the multiple bitstreams recorded from all three of the sub 1GHz receivers and my dev boards.

Any help from someone who has used any of the CC1101, CC110L, CC1310 to decode TPMS data would be extremely helpful.

    Here are some questions about the TPMS sensor that you are using:

    1. Is the modulation format Manchester encoded OOK?

    2. What is the data rate/symbol rate?

    3. Is the preample and the sync word also Manchester encoded or is it only the payload?

    4. What is transmitted by the sensor? Preamble+sync word+payload? 

    Can you also add your configuration file for CC1101 here please?

    1. The signal is manchester encoded. According to the open source documentation I found the modulation is FSK encoding rather than OOK. The reason I have been using OOK setting was due to the CC1101 only receiving data when I had the modulation set to OOK mode. I had the same experience on my CC1310 dev board.

    2. I am unsure about the data rate/ symbol rate. Is there a formula I can use to calulate using the working CC1101 code?

    3. Yes, the preamble and sync word are encoded in manchester along with the payload itself.

    4. The sensor transmits all of the fields Preamble + Sync Word + Payload.

    Please see the register setting bits below with my current settings on the CC1101. These settings seem to be working, but I have to do all calculations on the MCU. This is not ideal because it is a massive overhead on the MCU. I would prefer to properly configure the CC1101 to do the decoding and just to SPI_Read the CC1101 after an interupt (GDO0) is received on the MCU.

  • Hi Steve,

    You cannot use an OOK PHY to receive a FSK signal. They are completely different modulation formats. Furthermore, it it essential to know the datarate as the receiver BW, deviation etc. are all dependent on it.

    Our devices use preample consisting of a sequence of 1 and 0. As the TPMS uses a different preample, you will not be able to receive anything reasonable.

    In addition, CC1310 manchester encodes only the paylaod while the other two devices manchester encodes everything.

    I've read over the previous posts you've sent.  The last post is exactly what I am trying to do, down to the SP37 or SP40T infineon TPMS sensor being used.

    I read that it is not possible to use the CC1101 outside of async mode (as I am now) to read this type of data.

    If that is true, the CC1101 will not work for my application. Doing all decoding on the MCU side will be too much of a burden for our system.

    Does the newer CC110L allow the proper on chip decoding of this data? (Meaning access to internal FIFO buffering and Manchester Decoding)?

    If not, could I accomplish my task with another TI chip instead?

    I got the CC1310 early on because there was no current dev kit for the CC1101. Now I have been able to make my own using a TrxEB board and CC1101 433mHz module from Amazon.

    This previous poster from 7 years ago is trying to do exactly what I am down to using the same SP37 transmitter. I have both the Sp37 and Sp40T now since the Sp37 has been EOL'd since then.

  • The CC110L has less functionality than the CC1101 (see https://e2e.ti.com/support/wireless-connectivity/other-wireless-group/other-wireless/f/other-wireless-technologies-forum/153153/cc110l-vs-cc1101 ), so would not be a better solution for this.


    Unfortunately async mode with the CC1310 will give worse performance than the CC1101 as it is not designed for it. However, it is a SoC so that is an advantage.

    Which Do you have a different TI Sub-1GHz chip I should use to decode the TPMS signals?

    The SOC is not required for my application. We are already using an existing MCU in the product and would prefer a tranceiver to receive the signals and communicate with the existing MCU over SPI.

  • I cannot find a device that would be better suited for this; all of our Sub-1 GHz devices currently supported will require a similar process for this particular TPMS signal to be decoded, I'm afraid.

    I skimmed through some of the old posts and it looked like that the post that looked most relevant uses a slightly different format. If the packet format is as the above and you have known sync word you should be able to receive the data after the SS SS nibbles in the RX buffer if you set the sync word to 0xDD33 and by this avoid using async mode. Have I misunderstood something?

    Yes, you are correct. My issue is that when setting the correct frequency and sync word to use the CC1101 I receive data in Smart RF studio, but the received data has absolutely no match to the known good data that was received in RTL_433 (using RTL_SDR) receiver, and in async mode of the CC1101. 

    If you see the included text files (Jansite CC1101_4_3.txt for example) I have the received data and also manually bit-inverted it on the next line. However, no matter what I do, In normal mode I am not able to find the TPMS hex bytes (8a5c2405510008ec7d or 8a5c2405514208e078 or 8a5c2405514308667b) in any of the outputs. 

    I have tried manchester mode enabaled and disabled, SYNC0 = 0xDD & SYNC1 = 0x33, SYNC0 = 0x33 & SYNC1 = 0xDD, All modulation schemes (OOK, GFSK, ... etc), and all of the suggested data rates in Smart RF studio with absolutely no luck at getting the "golden data". 

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • You need to know the datarate and modulation format. You can get some indication of this using a high end spectrum.
