Not being able to connect to SmartRF Studio 7

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2531

I am currently using a SmartRF05EB Rev 1.8.1 and trying to connect to SmartRF Studio 7 Rev I. I installed the Cebal and connected it through the  CC2531 USB Dongle. For the life of me I can't get the device to connect up, however everything works 100% when running the demo temperature program that comes pre-installed. I am connecting the Dongle to the Debugger. I am lost. If there is anything that I need to check I would be extremely appreciative if someone would give me a heads up. Thanks,

Andrew

  • Hi Andrew,

You will have to connect via the CC Debugger to make it work with Studio. The CC Debugger shall be connected to the debug connector on the USB Dongle. It does not work if you just plug the USB directly to a USB port on the PC.

First check that the CC debugger is able to detect the CC2531. The green light o the CC Debugger shall be on. SmartRf Studio shall then be able to detect the CC2531, if not check if its listed in the device manager on your PC (it shall show up there under "Cebal devices").

    Hope this helps,

  • Bjorn,

First of all thank you for getting back to me so quickly, this is the fastest customer service from a micro controller dealer that I have ever had. Second, so the example photo in page 11 of the SmartRF05 Evaluation Board User's Guide isn't the correct way to connect the SmartRF05EB to SmartRF Studio? I can purchase the part no problem, I just figure that the CC2531 would connect up, but since it is just an eval kit I can understand why it doesn't come with everything. Thanks again for getting back to me so quick.

  • Last thing, I did check device manager and it does see the cebal controller devices/ CC2531 USB dongle. Thanks again,

  • Hi Andrew,

Yes the example photo in Figure 8, Page 11 of SmartRF05EB User's Guide is the correct way to connect it for SmartRF Studio.

You can use either a SmartRf05EB (as illustrated in figure 8) or a CC Debugger connected this way. If the CC2531 is detected correctly the device name shall be shown on the LCD of the SmartRF05EB (or in case you are using CC Debugger instead, its green light is on).

  • I got it hooked up, I didn't read anything about plugging up the second USB cable, however I saw it in the picture. Everything is connected up fine. Thanks for the quick responses!

  • Did you get Studio up and running now with the CC2531?

Since you see it in Device Manager under Cebal devices the device is connected correctly.

If you still have problems with seeing the device in Studio, please check which driver version the device is associated with (in Device manager right click on the device, and select "properties").
