CC1312R: Wi-SUN router node not connecting to border router

We have set up a WI-SUN network with about 50 CC1312R1 modules running as Wi-SUN router nodes (more specifically using the Wireless Solar Management System stack), and 2 CC1213R7 modules running as Wi-SUN border routers. Overall, the network is functioning well, but we have encountered an issue with with about 20 router nodes that have not connected to either border router for the past 5 days. From the logs we captured from one of the router nodes that are not connecting, by defining the EXCLUDE_TRACE macro, it seems like this particular router node is only receiving packets at PHY channel 107. All router nodes are using the same firmware. Also, if we manually reset the router nodes with the issue, they do connect to the Wi-SUN network.

    We are using the wsms_ipv6node project from CC1312R7 ported to CC1312R1. I forgot wsms example projects are not available for CC1312R1 in the current SIMPLELINK-LOWPOWER-F2-SDK Version 7.41.00.17. Therefore, when I mentioned I'm using wsms stack, it may not have made much sense. My apologies for the oversight.

    thank you very much for the clarification. 

    So your setup is the following:
    - 2 CC1213R7 WSMS bases - wsms_ipv6base
    - 50 CC1312R1 WSMS nodes - wsms_ipv6node

    The reason that there is no example project for the wsms_ipv6node project for CC1312R1 is that is barely fits into the flash and there is not much space left for a custom application. Did you already verify that this will work for you?

    Regarding your issue please answer the following questions:
    1. Do I understand correctly that the network works as expected for the two bases and 30 nodes?
    2. Are always the same 20 nodes showing this behavior or is it every time different and different number of nodes?
    3. How is your local setup are all of the devices in the same room or are they spread out? -> If so in which distances, which tx power do you use, which other obstructions are in between?
    4. Do you force a star network topology (option in SysConfig)?
    5. Do you force the nodes to join a specific base or do you just start the network on both base devices and wait for the as autostart configured nodes to join?

    We are actually using:

    - 2 CC1213R7  Wi-SUN FAN bases - ns_br

    - 50 CC1312R1 WSMS nodes - wsms_ipv6node

    Our custom application already is in this router node firmware, and it indeed barely fits into CC1312R1 flash. In this firmware, I actually changed Security Level to "Wi-SUN Compliant Security With Key Exchange" in sysconfig.

    As for the border router firmware, it is the CC1312R7 ns_br project with default sysconfig settings.

    This is not necessarily related to the problem but I have a question. Can you clarify what are the differences between the WSMS stack with Security Level "Wi-SUN Compliant Security With Key Exchange", and the Wi-SUN FAN Stack?

    As for your questions:

    1. Yes.

    2. We need to test that, we have manually restarted the nodes that were not connecting, and they are connected now. I will update about this later if this problem occurs again.

    3. I will check this and update later.

    4. No.

    5. No, I don't force nodes to join a specific border router. I indeed just start the network on both base devices and wait for the nodes to connect.Our network is using the same Network Name for router nodes and border routers, so nodes may join either border router.

    Please keep me updated if the issue occurs again. So far it seems like the nodes were not started up correctly for some reason.

    The short version is that WSMS includes specific features that are not Wi-SUN compliant but improve the performance of especially networks with a size below 50 nodes. These features can not be deactivated for the WSMS projects but when you look at the SysConfig of the Wi-SUN project they can be selected there as well and are described in the Wi-SUN User's Guide here: https://dev.ti.com/tirex/explore/node?node=A__ADg-OA1lkmNpV7sMfCNnZA__com.ti.SIMPLELINK_CC13XX_CC26XX_SDK__BSEc4rl__LATEST&placeholder=true 

    A short description of the different security options can be opened in SysConfig by clicking on the question mark next to "Security Level".


    When you look at the "Wi-SUN Compliant Security With Key Exchange" then you see that this is the only option that is Wi-SUN standard compliant. It is the option that you also need to select with our Wi-SUN FAN example projects if you want to be standard compliant. The disadvantage of this option s that the key exchange takes additional time in the join process and for renewing the key after it's timeout. For WSMS we recommend to use the "Preshared Key" option if you want to achieve the fastest possible join time and don't want to be Wi-SUN standard compliant.

    So basically you can start from the Wi-SUN CoAP example projects and select in the advanced options the non standard compliant features and you will end up with the WSMS example.

    As for question 3, we have about 30 nodes in a room close to each other, basically side by side. The other 20 nodes are outside but close to this room (about 5 meters), and these nodes are also side by side. The border routers are 5 to 20 meters away from the nodes, and there are 1 to 3 walls obstructing the nodes and border routers. We are using a txpower of 5. Given this setup, it seems unlikely that the devices are unable to communicate with each other.

    I agree that there should be no issues with this setup as long as there is no high interference or high noise floor.

    Do I understand correctly that one of the border routers is 15 meters closer to the nodes than the other one?

    In this case it might be that all of the nodes chose to connect to the first border router depending on the routing cost.
    Did you monitor that?

    I meant to say that the distance between the border routers and nodes can range from approximately 5 to 20 meters. The distance between the border routers is about 5 meters.

    I did check that the nodes that were not connecting were not connected to either border router.

    I apologize for the misunderstanding.

    I just wanted to mention that in case that the two border routers are in different distances to the nodes they might all decide to join the closer border router depending on the routing cost (rssi, hops, ...). 
    But since they seem pretty close to each other I don't think this is something that you will encounter.
    This was just an additional though regarding your test setup.
