LP-EM-CC1314R10: Smart RF Studio RSSI report

Part Number: LP-EM-CC1314R10

Tool/software:

When receiving packets from my CC1312 proprietary RF link, using a CC1314 Launchpad I

get an average RSSI of 0 to -1.5 dBm. This is obviously wrong, and since the distance

between measuring and the link is 20 m or so, values should be in the -40 -70 or so interval.

Most packet dumps terminate with 01 02 30 | 0 where the data before the | varies, but the trailing figure

is 0. On some packets the trailing figure is something like -100 , so I interprete the trailing figure as RSSI.

How come it reports 0 on many packets, and why?

The link seems to get reasonable RSSI values....

Gullik

  • Hi Gullik,

As a first step, please step through SWRA603 (Debugging Communication Range): https://www.ti.com/lit/swra603

    • Are you using SmartRF Studio 7 to test the LaunchPads?
    • Are both devices configured to use identical settings?
    • When you state "The link seems to get reasonable RSSI values....", please can you clarify this with regards to "I get an average RSSI of 0 to -1.5 dBm"?
    • What is your testing environment? With no device in TX, if a LaunchPad is set to Continous RX what is the measured RSSI level?

    Regards,

    Zack

    • Are you using SmartRF Studio 7 to test the LaunchPads?
    • YES!!
    • Are both devices configured to use identical settings?
    • YES, and I see the traffic
    • When you state "The link seems to get reasonable RSSI values....", please can you clarify this with regards to "I get an average RSSI of 0 to -1.5 dBm"?
    • This is what SmartRF studio reports as I listen to my traffic. Since pin = pout -32.56 db -20 *log10(F) -20log10(dist),  -1.5 dBm reported as average RSSI is 30 to 40 dB to high
    • and thus completely unreasonable.
    • What is your testing environment? With no device in TX, if a LaunchPad is set to Continous RX what is the measured RSSI level?
    • AS I said, a rf link between two units MONITORED at 20 m distance shows -1.5 dBm.....

My guess is that SmartRF Studio 7 takes the average of all collected RSSI's and when some report as 0 the average becomes wrong...

    My best regards,

Exciting to explore this chip ...and its software...

  • Hi Gullik,

Please share the PHY settings you are using.
