CC1312PSIP: Inconsistent results between different batches

During our testing, we found that the TX current varies from batch to batch, which is causing issues with our automated testing during production.
Are these variations considered normal? I’m asking because the differences seem quite significant to me.

We also encountered another issue with the RX current. During testing, we found that three components were drawing around 25mA—double the expected value of approximately 12mA. After replacing those components, the current returned to normal, and everything functioned correctly.

You can see the results below. I’ve also attached a PDF file that includes a histogram for reference.

    when Tx current was measured did you also measure the output power? If you did could you also share this information?

    What output power setting was used?

    Please find the results for Tx power as well.

    you can see that for 915MHz the output power is almost the same
    and for 868MHz for the higher current we receive even lower output Tx power

    Tx output power looks low. What is the output power setting being used? Are your measurements conducted or radiated measurements?

  • The output power you see is from our production line and include all the ATE loss, we don't insert a correction factor and that's the reason that you see lower power.

    But in all cases the Tx command is the same.

    And as you can see the output power is almost the same. but the current is not.

  • Regarding the 5 failing devices in the Rx current test, it could be due to the antenna pin not being properly soldered or a mismatched antenna.

    Have you tried reflowing the boards and retesting?

    What type of antenna is being used? Is it possible to add a 50 ohm load instead of an antenna and test the Rx current consumption again?

    Regarding the Rx issue, they replaced only the SIP, and the problem was fixed as a result of this rework.

    Note that before we did the replacement, we checked with X-ray and saw that all the pad soldering was perfect.

    And all the 868MHz test done with output power of +16dBm.

    Do you test active and standby current consumption? We are wondering if on the devices with Rx current consumption issue you only saw higher current consumption under Rx or also in active mode or standby mode.

    On those 4 devices if you transmit the on Sub-1GHz port instead of the high power PA do you see lower output power or does output power look ok?

    We have also contacted the production team to get more information.

    We got a response from the production team. The 5 devices would not have passed the Rx current test in our production test because the current would have been outside the test limits.

    Thanks for your input.

    After assembling the SIP units, we measured a current of 25mA. Following rework and replacement with new SIP units, the current consumption returned to the expected levels.

    Regarding your question about the current in different modes for the problematic unit, I currently have only one unit. The current consumption during Tx mode was 39.7mA, which is as expected.

    Do you have any updates regarding the inconsistency of the Tx current between different batches?

    Thank you for the reply.

    Was this unit tested on the 20 dBm port? If it, was could you test Tx on the sub-1GHz port? What I'm trying to figure it is if there is some kind of damage in RF_N and/or RF_P that causes the excessive Rx current consumption.

    Regarding Tx current, even though the devices from the 3rd test have higher Tx current consumption than the 1st and 2nd test, the current consumption is within the production test limits.

    I'm not sure how to check the Rx current on the +20dBm it is all internal including the SPDT.
    Any way the problematic SIP units been replaced with new one. and I can't check this issue now.

    Regarding the inconsistency with the Tx Current, we tested a different product using the SIP on 915MHz this week.

    From our first test, the average current was 38.7mA. In the second test, where we tested about 80 PCBs, the average current was 34mA.

    You can also see the differences in the minimum and maximum values in the attached table.

    Note that the output power command here is +14dBm

    1. Could you please share the Tx current limits from your production line for +20 dBm, +14 dBm, and +10 dBm, for both the 868 MHz and 915 MHz bands?

    2. Do you have any update regarding the double Rx current we measured?

  • Have you checked the antenna connectors? Its more likely a hardware connection issue in my opinion.

    It's not the antenna — we've checked that. The inconsistency seems to be tied to the SIP batch. We also tried replacing the peripheral components, but that didn’t have any effect.

    By the way, I noticed you didn’t respond to the two questions I asked earlier — could you take a look?

    Regarding Is the SIP always operating in DC-DC mode?:  Please see: CC1312PSIP: CC1312PSIP 

    It will run in DC/DC mode unless configured to not do so - it can be turned off.

    2.

    Do you have any update regarding the double Rx current we measured?

    As mentioned by Diego, the measured Rx current consumption would not have passed our production screening (with the DC/DC turned on or off). I have contacted the production team for further comment on this.

    I might be missing something, but I can't see the symbolisation for the units with the increased Rx current consumption you observed. Was this on the same units that you measured the increased Tx current consumption on?

    3.

    Have you observed increased current consumption in subsequent batches or has this only been seen on the batches you previously measured (with the symbolisation you shared in your initial post)?

    4.

    An output power of +14 dBm can be set using either the +20 HPA output or the regular RF ports (it is overlapping). This can be set either using SmartRF Studio 7 or in CCS (by enabling/disabling the +20 dBm HPA - there is a selectable option for this).

    The reason Diego asked is to establish whether the Tx current consumption trend is seen for both RF outputs (regular and +20 dBm HPA), or only the +20 dBm HPA.
